Hudson Old Master Cabernet Franc 2022

Hudson Old Master Cabernet Franc 2022 is Hudson Vineyard’s iconic Cabernet Franc-led Bordeaux blend and one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after red wines. Named in honour of vineyard pioneer Lee Hudson, it combines the character of Carneros with meticulous craftsmanship, blending Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon into a wine of remarkable depth, freshness and elegance.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep, concentrated colour, followed by an expressive and layered nose of blackcurrants, black cherries and ripe plums. Violet, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate and dried Mediterranean herbs add further complexity. On the palate, Old Master is intense yet remarkably precise, with silky tannins and layers of dark fruit supported by liquorice, espresso and warm spice. Cabernet Franc brings freshness and aromatic lift, while a long, mineral finish reinforces the wine’s refined structure. Already impressive in its youth, the 2022 has the concentration and balance to develop beautifully over the next two decades when properly cellared.

Production
The grapes are sourced from the oldest and best-positioned parcels at Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, where the cool influence of San Pablo Bay extends the growing season and helps preserve freshness. All fruit is harvested and sorted by hand before being vinified parcel by parcel. The wine matures for 23 months in French oak barrels, most of them new, and is bottled without fining or filtration to retain maximum concentration and terroir expression. Only the finest barrels are selected for this limited-production flagship.

Food & Serving
Its depth and structure make Old Master an excellent match for prime beef, roast lamb, venison and other game, as well as richly flavoured dishes such as braised short ribs or mushroom-based preparations. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for one to two hours when enjoying the wine young to allow its aromas and texture to open; mature bottles should be decanted more carefully, primarily to remove any sediment.

Hudson Vineyard was founded by Lee Hudson, whose uncompromising approach to vineyard work and quality has helped establish the estate as one of California’s most respected. The winery’s team includes Lee and Cristina Hudson, John Kongsgaard and Christopher Vandendriessche, with all vineyard work carried out by hand. Old Master is produced only in vintages that meet Hudson’s exacting standards, making it the estate’s flagship red wine and a highly limited expression of Carneros.
