Description
Hosanna 2021 is a poised and expressive red from Bordeaux, capturing the finesse and perfume that define top Right Bank wines in a cooler, classical vintage. Marrying ripe black fruit with lifted herbal and spice notes, it offers a surprisingly generous, layered palate for the year. As a boutique cru from some of Pomerol’s most prized terroir, this wine has quickly earned a reputation as one of the appellation’s modern stars.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hosanna 2021 shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with hints of purple at the rim, reflecting both concentration and youthful energy. The nose opens with pure aromas of blackcurrant and wild blueberry, tinged with minty freshness, before unfolding into nuanced notes of baked dark chocolate, licorice and a hint of pencil shavings and warm spice.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, silky and fleshy, with a layered mid-palate that feels impressively rich and complete for the vintage. Ripe black and blue fruits are framed by sweet, powdery tannins that coat the mouth without ever feeling harsh. Subtle cocoa, graphite and savory spice notes carry into a long, gently warming finish. While already seductive in its youth, this 2021 has the structure and balance to age gracefully over the next 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Hosanna 2021 is crafted from classic Right Bank Bordeaux varieties, predominantly Merlot supported by Cabernet Franc, rooted in Pomerol’s coveted mix of gravelly, clay and iron-rich soils. These well-drained yet moisture-retentive parcels allow slow, even ripening, preserving freshness in a relatively cool vintage like 2021. The fruit is harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it into the final wine. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for a gentle yet thorough extraction of color, flavor and fine tannins, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new, to add polish, spice and structure without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
Hosanna 2021 is an elegant yet ample Pomerol that pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as roast lamb with herb crust, veal chops, beef tenderloin, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also works wonderfully with truffled poultry, wild mushroom risottos, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Beaufort. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression; if opened in its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours will help the aromatics blossom and soften the tannins. As the wine ages, a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Hosanna is one of Pomerol’s most exciting relatively young estates, created at the turn of the 21st century when the renowned négociant and vineyard owner Jean-Pierre Moueix acquired and restructured the former Château Certan-Giraud. Despite its modest size, the property sits on a privileged stretch of the Pomerol plateau, surrounded by some of the appellation’s most illustrious neighbors. Since its inaugural vintages, Hosanna has quickly built a reputation for producing deeply colored, sensuous and complex wines that marry modern precision with classic Right Bank charm. Under the stewardship of the Moueix family, whose influence in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion is long established, Hosanna has secured a coveted place among the region’s leading boutique châteaux.
