Description
Hosanna 2016 is a luxurious Pomerol that captures the depth and purity of a great Right Bank vintage in a single glass. Silky, layered and impeccably refined, it marries luscious Merlot fruit with the lift and perfume of Cabernet Franc for a wine that is both hedonistic and beautifully poised. This small, highly sought‑after cru has quickly become one of Pomerol’s modern benchmarks, building on the prestige of its exceptional terroir on the appellation’s famed plateau.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hosanna 2016 shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, already hinting at its concentration while retaining a youthful edge. The bouquet unfurls with an almost exotic perfume: violets, lilacs and lavender interwoven with black and red cherries, ripe plums and black raspberries. With air, notes of dark chocolate, espresso, cedar chest, pipe tobacco and a touch of minty chocolate emerge, layered over a subtle earthiness reminiscent of damp soil and truffle.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, dense yet wonderfully sleek, with a velvety cloak of tannins that feels polished and caressing. Waves of black cherry, plum and blackberry compote are lifted by floral and red-fruited accents, while hints of mocha, cedar, spice and wet earth add complexity through the long, perfumed finish. Still youthful and somewhat primary today, it already offers great pleasure, but the structure and intensity suggest excellent aging potential. Enjoy from around 2026 and expect it to evolve gracefully through 2055, developing more truffle, tobacco and savory nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Château Hosanna lies on the central plateau of Pomerol, a prized strip of gravel and clay with iron-rich subsoils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. The 2016 blend is composed of approximately 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, sourced from mature vines that dig deep into this complex terroir, giving the wine its signature richness and aromatic lift. Grapes are harvested by hand in small batches to ensure optimal ripeness, then carefully sorted before vinification in temperature-controlled vats. Fermentation is managed parcel by parcel to preserve the identity of each plot, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) to build texture, finesse and aromatic complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
Hosanna 2016 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-cooked beef short ribs, duck breast with a red wine reduction or veal tenderloin with morel mushrooms. It also shines alongside truffle risotto, wild mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help open the bouquet and soften the structure; as it matures, a gentle splash decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Hosanna is a relatively young name in Pomerol, but it occupies an illustrious site with a long history, once part of some of the appellation’s most esteemed vineyards. Under the stewardship of Établissements Jean‑Pierre Moueix—the influential family firm behind several of Pomerol’s most iconic estates—Hosanna has rapidly earned a reputation for producing wines of opulence, precision and striking aromatic complexity. Its small size and privileged position on the plateau make it one of the region’s true boutique treasures, and vintages like 2016 underscore why collectors and enthusiasts increasingly view Hosanna as one of Pomerol’s standout stars.
