Description
Höfflin Rufus Cuvée 2022 is a Baden red led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with dark berry fruit and green pepper lift, gentle oak spice and loess-grown depth here. Cabernet Franc brings a green bell pepper flicker. Merlot softens the middle. Oak gives baking spice, and the loess and loam leave a faint dusty edge.
About the Wine
Rufus Cuvée 2022 comes from Baden’s Markgräflerland, where Höfflin blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot on loess and loam. The wine carries the district name into a darker register than local Gutedel country suggests. At 11.5% alcohol, the fruit reads cool and clear. The site’s loess and loam appear in the glass as a faint earthy dust under the blackberry skin. The Cabernet Franc element adds a small herbal snap before the ripe fruit settles in.
In the cellar, Höfflin ages Rufus in oak barrels and bottles the wine dry. The barrel work shows as baking spice, clove and a touch of toasted sweetness. Cabernet Sauvignon supplies the darker frame. Merlot rounds the middle with a softer plum and berry feel. The marmalade note reads as aroma and oak-toned fruit. A faint green bell pepper note sits at the edge of the dark fruit.
Tasting Notes
The first smell is blackberry compote, marmalade peel and dark plum, with the jam-like richness named in Höfflin’s own note. Baking spice follows from the oak with clove, cocoa nib and a little toasted sweetness that stays close to the fruit. Cabernet Franc leaves green bell pepper at the rim of the glass, and that herbal edge gives Rufus Cuvée 2022 a clear Cabernet-family accent. The palate is dry and firmly built, with modest alcohol, savoury grip and a finish that brings blackberry skin, pepper, spice and loess-like dust together. Drink from 2024 to 2028.
Food Pairing
Pour Höfflin Rufus Cuvée 2022 with grilled rib-eye, roast lamb shoulder or a beef ragù over pappardelle. The Cabernet Franc green pepper note picks up roasted peppers, tomato sauce and herb crusts, so it feels especially good beside pasta with sausage and sweet red pepper. For a regional plate, try Badisches Schäufele with potato salad and mustardy pickles. Aged Gouda, Comté or mountain cheese bring out the oak spice and marmalade edge. Charcuterie with black pepper salami also suits the wine’s dry finish and savoury bite.
Producer
Höfflin is the producer behind Rufus, and the clearest signature here is the choice to build a Baden red from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot in Markgräflerland, on loess and loam in this release. That gives the bottle a clear place in this district, where Gutedel often starts the local conversation and Cabernet-family reds feel like a more personal decision from the cellar for this Baden producer. In the 2022 Rufus Cuvée, Höfflin keeps the house stamp in a dry finish and 11.5% alcohol; oak-barrel spice sits next to a clear Cabernet Franc green note in the glass. The producer leaves that green bell pepper detail visible, which makes this cuvée feel connected to Cabernet Franc before the blackberry, marmalade and dark plum notes take over in the aroma. The oak barrels act as seasoning, with baking spice and light toast folded into the middle of the wine; this treatment suits the modest alcohol and dry shape of Rufus with clarity here. Look for Höfflin’s hand in the way the finish stays savoury after the ripe fruit fades; the final sip leaves blackberry skin, clove, a touch of green pepper and loess-like dust on the tongue.
