Description
The 2017 Historical 19th Century Wine Blend from Château Palmer is a refined Bordeaux blend that brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot in the elegant Margaux style the estate is known for. As a 3ème Grand Cru Classé, it reflects both pedigree and precision, offering a wine with depth, finesse, and a clear sense of place. Château Palmer has long held a special place in Bordeaux history, and this cuvée nods to the estate’s tradition of crafting wines with remarkable balance and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby-purple color with an expressive, polished appearance. The nose is layered and graceful, with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, violet, cedar, tobacco, and subtle spice, often joined by a touch of graphite and earthy nuance. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins, bright acidity, and a core of ripe black fruit framed by savory, mineral notes and well-integrated oak. The finish is long and composed, with the structure to evolve beautifully over time.
While approachable in its youth with proper aeration, this vintage has the balance and backbone to age gracefully for many years. With cellaring, the fruit will gradually soften into more complex notes of leather, truffle, dried flowers, and forest floor.
Production
This wine is rooted in the gravelly terroirs of Margaux, where well-draining soils and the moderating influence of the Gironde help the grapes achieve ripeness while preserving freshness and aromatic lift. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot is carefully selected to express both power and elegance. Harvesting is typically carried out by hand to ensure precision, and vinification follows a meticulous estate approach designed to preserve purity of fruit, structure, and the distinctive character of each parcel.
Food & Serving
A natural match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, venison, or dishes with mushroom and truffle elements, this wine also pairs well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and textures to open fully.
Producer
Château Palmer is one of Margaux’s most respected estates, with a reputation built on consistency, complexity, and a uniquely supple style. Classified as a 3ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has earned enduring admiration for wines that combine structure with perfume and finesse. Over the years, the estate has achieved widespread acclaim among collectors and critics alike for producing some of the most expressive and age-worthy wines in Bordeaux.
