Description

Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling Uhlen Laubach Großes Gewächs 2017 is a powerful, terroir-driven dry Riesling from one of the Mosel’s most dramatic vineyard sites. Crafted as a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS, it represents the pinnacle of dry Riesling from this estate, combining intensity, minerality and long-lived structure. This is a wine for serious Riesling lovers, showcasing the darker, more savory and profoundly mineral side of the Mosel.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Uhlen Laubach presents a concentrated, shimmering straw-yellow color with green reflections, hinting at both ripeness and freshness. The nose is initially quite restrained and herbal, opening slowly to reveal a complex, dry and decidedly mineral bouquet: notes of dried herbs and soup greens, damp earth, crushed stone and flint, with subtle yellow fruit in the background – pineapple, candied citrus and a touch of curry spice, saffron and tobacco leaf. Hints of lees, smoke and savory spice add further depth. On the palate, this is a ripe and concentrated yet remarkably cool and precise Riesling. The fruit shows as sweetly juicy and slightly creamy in texture – yellow stone fruit, pineapple and a touch of candied citrus – wrapped in a firm, grippy structure. Fine, focused acidity runs through the wine, balanced by noticeable but well-integrated phenolic grip and a pronounced, almost salty minerality. Herbal and spicy nuances (saffron, dried kitchen herbs, a hint of floral lift) echo the nose, leading into a long, sweetly juicy yet dry-tasting, spicy and strongly mineral finish. Still youthful and somewhat closed, this Großes Gewächs has excellent aging potential and will continue to gain complexity over 10–15 years or more from vintage.

Production
The Uhlen Laubach parcel is one of Heymann-Löwenstein’s most distinctive crus, a steep Mosel slope characterized by calcareous, weathered slate with a high limestone content (“Laubach”), which lends a particularly stony, herbal and tensile character to the Riesling. Vines are worked by hand on the precipitous terraces, with careful selection at harvest to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy grapes make it into the Großes Gewächs. After a gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place, typically in stainless steel and/or large traditional wooden casks, followed by extended maturation on the lees. This low-intervention approach allows the specific terroir of Uhlen Laubach to shape the wine’s intense mineral profile and firm structure.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic Riesling that shines with refined, savory cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roasted or poached white fish, shellfish, scallops and lobster, especially when accompanied by herb-inflected sauces or subtle curry and saffron notes. It also works well with veal, free-range chicken, pork tenderloin, and vegetable-driven dishes such as herb risotto, roasted root vegetables, or fine Asian-inspired cuisine with ginger and lemongrass. Serve at 10–12 °C in a large white wine or Burgundy-style glass to allow the aromatics to unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to help the wine open up and reveal its full depth.

Producer
Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein is one of the modern benchmarks of the Mosel, renowned for its expressive, terroir-focused Rieslings from steep slate terraces along the Terrassenmosel. Led by Reinhard Löwenstein, the estate has played a pivotal role in redefining the region’s reputation for powerful, dry and complex Rieslings, particularly from sites like Uhlen, Röttgen and Kirchberg. As a VDP member, Heymann-Löwenstein classifies its top dry wines as Großes Gewächs, emphasizing site expression and rigorous quality standards. The winery’s distinctive, often richly textured and profoundly mineral wines have earned international acclaim and a loyal following among serious Riesling enthusiasts.
