Heymann-Löwenstein’s 2020 Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay is a site-specific Riesling Grosses Gewächs from the steep terraces of the Lower Mosel. Produced from old vines rooted in blue-grey Devonian slate, it expresses the distinctive mineral character of one of the Terrassenmosel’s most renowned vineyards. Tasting Notes
The available tasting description is based on the 2017 vintage, while the 2020 vintage may show its own nuances. That note describes an aromatic profile of pear, yellow apple and ripe, juicy fruit, supported by the pronounced mineral character associated with the blue-grey slate soils of the Blaufüsser Lay. On the palate, the wine is expected to combine concentrated Riesling fruit with freshness, structure and a firm, stony finish. With its old vines, naturally low yields and powerful slate-driven structure, this is a Riesling with considerable ageing potential. It can be enjoyed in its youth for its energy and fruit, but should develop greater complexity and tertiary notes over the coming years, provided it is stored well.

Production
The Uhlen vineyard extends across the villages of Winningen and Kobern-Gondorf in the Lower Mosel, also known as the Terrassenmosel. “Lay” is an historic term for slate, while “Blaufüsser” most likely refers to the blue-grey Devonian slate found in this particular parcel, which has a relatively high clay content. The Riesling vines are up to 60 years old, with many planted on their own roots. Grapes are hand-harvested from the extremely steep vineyard, reaching gradients of up to 170%. The wine is spontaneously fermented and matured in a large 2,400-litre wooden cask, without the addition of enzymes or fining agents.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 10–12°C. This structured Riesling is well suited to freshwater and saltwater fish, shellfish, poultry with creamy sauces, veal and dishes featuring herbs or lightly spiced Asian flavours. It can be enjoyed directly from the bottle, but decanting for 30–60 minutes may help reveal its mineral depth and aromatic complexity, particularly when served young.
