Description

Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay Großes Gewächs 2019 is a powerful, dry Mosel Riesling from one of the region’s most dramatic, terraced grand-cru vineyards. Drawn from old, often ungrafted vines rooted deep in blue-grey slate, this wine marries intense minerality with depth, structure and real aging potential. As a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS from the iconic Uhlen site, it represents one of the most serious and characterful expressions of dry Mosel Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Uhlen Blaufüsser Lay GG typically shows a bright, luminous straw to pale gold hue, reflecting both concentration and freshness. The nose is complex and slowly unfurls: ripe yellow apple, pear and mirabelle plum wrapped in notes of citrus zest, crushed slate, wild herbs and a faint smoky, flinty edge. Hints of white flowers, spice and a touch of salty sea breeze underline the wine’s cool, stony origin. On the palate, this is dry, focused and firmly structured, with the density and grip that are hallmarks of Uhlen. Ripe stone and orchard fruits are balanced by racy, finely etched acidity and a pronounced, almost tactile slate minerality. The mid-palate is powerful yet precise, leading into a long, salty, citric finish with notes of grapefruit, pear skin and wet stone. Still youthful in 2019, it has the backbone to evolve beautifully for 10–15 years or longer, gaining further complexity, spice and smoky, honeyed nuances with bottle age.

Production
The Blaufüsser Lay parcel lies in the famous Uhlen vineyard on the Terrassenmosel, spanning the steep slopes above Winningen and Kobern-Gondorf. Here, Devonian blue-grey slate with a higher clay content dominates, giving the wines their distinctive combination of power, spice and mineral depth. Vines are up to 60 years old, many of them ungrafted, clinging to terraces with gradients of up to 170%, which makes meticulous hand-harvesting the only option. After a strict selection of perfectly ripe Riesling grapes, fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts, allowing the character of site and vintage to shine through. The wine is then matured in large 2,400-liter traditional wooden casks, without added enzymes or fining agents, resulting in an unforced, authentic expression of this singular terroir.

Food & Serving
This concentrated, mineral-driven Riesling is a superb match for refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with roasted or poached fish (such as turbot, sea bass or trout), shellfish, scallops, and subtly spiced Asian dishes, as well as veal, roast chicken, or pork with light, herb-driven sauces. Mature hard cheeses and aged goat cheese also work well with its structure and salinity. Serve at around 10–12 °C; for maximum complexity, especially in its youth, decant for 30–60 minutes to allow the wine to open and reveal its full aromatic range.

Producer
Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein, based in Winningen on the Terrassenmosel, is one of Germany’s benchmark producers for powerful, terroir-driven dry Rieslings. Built over generations and now a member of the prestigious VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), the estate has been instrumental in redefining the potential of the steep, slate terraces of the lower Mosel. By focusing on old vines, rigorous handwork in extreme slopes, spontaneous fermentations and long, patient maturation in large oak casks, Heymann-Löwenstein has earned an international reputation for profoundly mineral, ageworthy wines. Their bottlings from Uhlen and its sub-parcels, such as Blaufüsser Lay, are considered among the finest and most expressive dry Rieslings of the region.
