Description
Heymann-Löwenstein Riesling Stolzenberg Großes Gewächs 2020 is a profound dry Mosel Riesling from one of Germany’s benchmark terroir-driven estates. Sourced from the steep Stolzenberg vineyard, this VDP.GROSSE LAGE bottling captures the wild, almost untamed character of blue slate soils in a particularly precise and expressive vintage. It’s a wine for enthusiasts who enjoy depth, texture and minerality over simple fruitiness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, pale gold color with green highlights, hinting at both youth and concentration. The nose is initially bold and almost savory: notes of smoked bacon fat, fried nuances and charcuterie spice (think marjoram and curing spices) mingle with subtle yellow stone fruit, sweet herbs and a cool, stony backdrop. With air, the fruit gradually steps forward—ripe mirabelle, yellow apple and a touch of citrus peel—wrapped in a fine herbal sweetness and flinty minerality.
On the palate, this Stolzenberg GG unfolds like a “cathedral of slate”: deep, vertical and seemingly endless in dimension. The attack is dry, powerful and tightly wound, with a firm, salty-mineral backbone and a tactile, almost powdery structure from extremely fine phenolics. Delicate hints of yellow fruit emerge slowly, together with notes of Darjeeling tea, dried herbs and a cool, smoky minerality that lingers long on the finish. The 2020 vintage has the concentration and acidity to age beautifully; expect this wine to develop further complexity over 10–15 years, gaining more honeyed, tea-like and nutty nuances while retaining its core of slate-driven precision.
Production
The Stolzenberg vineyard is a steep, terraced site along the Mosel, characterized by weathered slate soils that store heat by day and radiate it back to the vines at night, producing intensely mineral and structured Rieslings. Heymann-Löwenstein works these demanding slopes largely by hand, including selective hand-harvesting in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the Großes Gewächs. In the cellar, the must is typically fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, often in large traditional oak fuders or neutral vessels, followed by extended maturation on the lees to build texture, depth and a natural stability. The result is an unforced, terroir-transparent Riesling with impressive concentration and a distinctly savory-mineral profile.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that shines with richly flavored, savory dishes. Pair it with roasted or grilled white meats (such as veal, pork loin or corn-fed chicken), cured or smoked charcuterie, and dishes featuring mushrooms, root vegetables or roasted onions. It is also superb with aromatic, herb-laden cuisine—think roasted pork with marjoram, poultry with tarragon, or fine charcuterie boards with aged hard cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C in a generous white wine glass. Decanting for 30–60 minutes, especially in its youth, will help the more reductive and smoky notes unfold and allow the subtle fruit and tea-like nuances to emerge.
Producer
Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein, a distinguished VDP estate based in Winningen on the Lower Mosel, has become one of the key standard-bearers for powerful, terroir-expressive dry Rieslings from steep slate slopes. Under the guidance of Reinhard Löwenstein, the winery helped redefine the modern image of the Mosel by focusing on site-specific bottlings that highlight the geological diversity of the region’s dramatic terraced vineyards. The estate’s Grosse Gewächse from top sites such as Stolzenberg are regularly praised by international critics for their depth, longevity and unmistakable mineral character, cementing Heymann-Löwenstein’s reputation as a leading voice in contemporary German Riesling.
