Heymann-Löwenstein’s 2020 Kirchberg Großes Gewächs is a distinguished dry Riesling from one of the Mosel’s most dramatic vineyard sites. With its south-facing terraces, iron-rich red slate and quartzite soils, Kirchberg produces wines that combine striking mineral character with the warmth and concentration of the Terrassenmosel.

Tasting Notes
The wine is bright and focused in appearance, with a pale golden hue. Its aromatic profile is shaped by the warm, sun-exposed site: expect ripe citrus, yellow orchard fruit and subtle floral tones, underpinned by pronounced slate minerality and a delicate smoky, stony character. On the palate, the 2020 vintage balances generous fruit with vibrant Mosel freshness. Juicy citrus and ripe apple notes are framed by fine acidity, a firm mineral structure and a long, dry finish. The wine’s concentration and energy give it excellent ageing potential; it should develop further complexity over the next 8–15 years, and potentially longer in a well-kept cellar.

Production
Kirchberg lies above Hatzenport on the Terrassenmosel, where the vines face fully south on exceptionally steep slopes with gradients of approximately 100–150%. The site is among the warmest along the Mosel and is characterised by hard red slate, rich in iron oxide, together with quartzite. The grapes are harvested with great precision to preserve freshness and balance, while the estate’s non-interventionist approach avoids oenological corrections and allows the vineyard’s character to remain at the forefront.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 10–12°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. It is an excellent match for freshwater fish, shellfish, roast poultry, veal and dishes featuring asparagus or creamy sauces; its mineral structure also works beautifully with earthy vegetarian cuisine. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes in a carafe can help reveal additional layers when the wine is young.
