Description
Hensel’s Höhenflug Chardonnay 2024 is a polished Pfalz white that brings together Burgundian elegance and German precision. Aged in wood for around nine months, it offers a stylish balance of creamy texture, freshness, and subtle oak influence, reflecting both the warm climate of the region and Thomas Hensel’s international approach to winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Chardonnay shows a bright, inviting character with a ripe, expressive profile. The nose opens with aromas of toast, caramel, and vanilla, layered over notes of mature honeydew melon and gentle fruit sweetness.
On the palate, it is creamy and smooth, yet lifted by enough freshness to keep it lively and well-balanced. The oak aging adds depth and a rounded mouthfeel without overwhelming the fruit. While enjoyable now for its supple texture and generous aromatics, it should also hold well over the next few years if stored properly.
Production
Hensel is based in Pfalz, one of Germany’s warmest and most dynamic wine regions, just north of Alsace. The area around Bad Dürkheim has become especially well suited to Burgundy varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir, and Thomas Hensel has long embraced this shift. The wine was matured in oak for approximately nine months, contributing structure, complexity, and its signature toasted, creamy style.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes, pan-seared fish, veal, or shellfish served with butter-based sauces. It also works well with mushroom risotto and soft, mildly aged cheeses. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and decanting is not necessary, though a short time in the glass will help the aromas open up.
