Description
Henri Bonneau’s Les Rouliers NV (Lot 2011/2012) is a rare glimpse into the soul of one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most revered traditionalists. Drawn largely from declassified fruit and younger vines around Châteauneuf and the surrounding Rhône, it delivers the Bonneau house style at a more accessible level. This non-vintage blend of 2011 and 2012 captures the warmth, concentration and old-world charm that have made Henri Bonneau a cult name among Rhône enthusiasts.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Rouliers shows a deep, slightly hazy ruby to garnet hue, reflecting minimal intervention and traditional élevage. The nose is generous and inviting, with aromas of ripe red and black cherries, macerated strawberries, plum compote and dried herbs, layered with notes of leather, garrigue, black olive, pepper and a subtle gamey, earthy nuance that is unmistakably southern Rhône.
On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied with a supple, almost velvety texture, framed by fine, gently rustic tannins and a lingering, savory finish. Flavors echo the nose: sweet red cherry, black raspberry and stewed plum are interwoven with dried thyme, tobacco, licorice and a whisper of smoked meat. The non-vintage blend of 2011/2012 provides both the ripeness of warm vintages and a touch of freshness, making the wine approachable now but with enough structure to develop additional complexity over the next 5–8 years, gaining more truffle, leather and spice with time in bottle.
Production
Les Rouliers is typically sourced from parcels around Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the broader southern Rhône, where galet-strewn soils, clay, sand and limestone combine with the region’s famed Mistral winds to create ideal conditions for Grenache-based reds. Vines are traditionally low-yielding and often tended by hand, with harvesting carried out manually to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters make it into the cellar. True to Henri Bonneau’s philosophy, vinification is old-school: long, gentle fermentations in traditional vats, indigenous yeasts, and aging in well-seasoned foudres and old barrels rather than new oak, allowing the blend of 2011 and 2012 to harmonize slowly and express pure, unadorned Rhône character. Minimal filtration, if any, preserves the wine’s texture and aromatic complexity.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile Rhône red that shines alongside hearty, flavorful dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shanks with rosemary, daube Provençale, duck confit, grilled sausages with lentils, game birds, or rich vegetable dishes like ratatouille and mushroom ragout. Aged cheeses such as Comté, mature Gouda or semi-hard sheep’s cheeses also pair beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open fully, especially if enjoyed in its youth, but it can also be poured directly from the bottle for a more gradual evolution in the glass.
Producer
Henri Bonneau was a legendary, almost mythical figure in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for his tiny cellar, meticulous standards and fiercely traditional approach. From his historic base in the southern Rhône, he produced some of the most sought-after and long-lived Grenache-based wines, often in minuscule quantities. His wines are famous for their depth, complexity and idiosyncratic charm, embodying the essence of old-school Châteauneuf. Though the estate has always been small and somewhat secretive, Bonneau’s reputation among collectors and critics is immense, with many vintages of his top cuvées considered benchmarks for the region and celebrated for their extraordinary aging capacity and singular character.
