Description

Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2014 is a rare glimpse into the late master’s touch in a more understated Rhône vintage. Highly praised by critic Jeb Dunnuck (92–94/100), this wine marries Châteauneuf power with an almost Burgundian finesse and texture. In 2014, Bonneau produced essentially a single cuvée, and this bottling has quickly become a reference point for how great traditional Châteauneuf can be in so‑called “lesser” years.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Marie Beurrier shows a medium to deep ruby color, slightly translucent at the rim, reflecting the vintage’s elegance rather than sheer density. The nose is beautifully spiced and complex, with red and black cherries, raspberry compote, dried garrigue herbs (thyme, rosemary, bay), cracked white pepper, leather, and a subtle gamey nuance, all wrapped in a gentle note of old foudre and worn cedar. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a silky, almost Burgundian texture, fine-grained tannins, and lively, integrated acidity that keeps it fresh and precise. Flavors of sweet cherry, plum skin, dried strawberry, licorice, and blood orange intertwine with hints of cigar box, savory spice, and earth. It is not a blockbuster Bonneau, but rather a refined, graceful expression that drinks well now yet has the stuffing and balance to evolve further. Expect a solid aging window of another 8–12 years from release, gaining more tertiary notes of truffle, forest floor, and dried flowers with time in the cellar.

Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier is drawn largely from old-vine Grenache (typically around 85–90%) with small additions of Mourvèdre, Syrah, and other permitted Rhône varieties, grown on the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir of galets roulés (rounded river stones), sand, and clay. These low-yielding vines, many several decades old, are farmed traditionally and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure concentration without excess heaviness. In true Bonneau fashion, the grapes are usually vinified with a high proportion of whole clusters, fermented in concrete or neutral vessels with indigenous yeasts, and then aged for extended periods in large, very old oak foudres. The élevage is patient and oxidative in style, favoring texture, complexity, and harmony over polish and primary fruit, and the wine is bottled with minimal intervention to preserve its authentic character.

Food & Serving
This 2014 Marie Beurrier shines alongside refined, savory dishes that echo its aromatic complexity: think slow-braised lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic, duck confit, coq au vin, or a simple roast chicken with herbes de Provence. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffled risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and spice. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, both to let any initial reduction blow off and to fully open the layered bouquet.

Producer
Henri Bonneau is one of the most revered and mythical names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, representing the pinnacle of old-school, artisanal Rhône winemaking. Working largely alone in tiny, cramped cellars in the village of Châteauneuf, Bonneau crafted wines that became cult classics for their depth, complexity, and singular personality. His holdings—mostly in top sites such as La Crau—are planted to very old vines and have long been tended with meticulous, traditional care. Over the decades, cuvées like Cuvée Marie Beurrier and Réserve des Célestins have achieved near-legendary status, frequently earning top scores from leading critics and cementing Bonneau’s role as a benchmark for traditionally made Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Southern Rhône.
