Description

Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2013 in magnum is a rare opportunity to experience one of the Southern Rhône’s most revered traditionalists in a challenging yet captivating vintage. Drawn from some of Châteauneuf’s finest old-vine parcels and raised in the domaine’s famously ancient cellars, this cuvée is prized for its finesse, depth and singular personality. In 2013, when no Les Célestins was produced, Marie Beurrier takes center stage, offering a beautifully poised, silk-textured expression that speaks volumes about both terroir and producer.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2013 Marie Beurrier shows a translucent, garnet-red hue with brick-tinged reflections that hint at its evolving complexity. The nose is fragrant and refined rather than massive: red cherry, pomegranate and wild strawberry are lifted by notes of dried rose petals, garrigue herbs, white pepper and a touch of sweet spice from old foudres. Subtle hints of leather, orange peel and underbrush emerge with air, underscoring its traditional Châteauneuf character. On the palate, this is an elegant, medium-bodied style of Henri Bonneau, prioritizing texture and nuance over sheer power. The attack is supple and silky, with fine-grained tannins wrapping around bright, red-fruited flavors—pomegranate, red currant and cranberry—layered with gentle spice, licorice and savory herbal tones. The finish is long, graceful and saline, with a refreshing lift that invites another sip. In magnum, the wine gains additional longevity; it is drinking beautifully now for those who appreciate finesse, but has the structure and acidity to evolve further over the next 8–12 years under proper cellaring, developing more tertiary notes of forest floor, tobacco and game.

Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier is sourced primarily from old-vine Grenache, with small proportions of classic Southern Rhône varieties such as Mourvèdre and Counoise, rooted in the pebble-strewn, clay- and limestone-based soils that define the best sites of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The region’s Mediterranean climate—hot, sun-drenched days tempered by cooling mistral winds—ensures full phenolic ripeness while preserving freshness, which in a cooler, more challenging year like 2013 has translated into remarkable elegance. Harvest is done by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and cellar to retain only perfectly healthy grapes. Fermentation is decidedly traditional, with whole or partially destemmed clusters fermented in neutral vessels using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for extended periods in a mix of very old foudres and barrels in Bonneau’s cool, subterranean cellars, allowing it to develop its trademark silky texture and complex bouquet without overt oak imprint. Bottling is typically done with minimal intervention, respecting the natural character of the vintage.

Food & Serving
This refined 2013 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an excellent partner for dishes that echo its elegance and aromatic complexity rather than overpower it. Think slow-roasted lamb shoulder with thyme and rosemary, roast duck with Provençal herbs, braised rabbit, or game birds with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with richer vegetable preparations such as ratatouille, roasted root vegetables, lentil dishes or aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to emphasize freshness and aromatic lift. In magnum format, and given its traditional vinification, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open, especially if enjoyed in its youth or mid-maturity.

Producer
Henri Bonneau was one of the legendary figures of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a fiercely traditional vigneron whose tiny cellar and minuscule production achieved near-mythic status among collectors and Rhône enthusiasts. Working from old-vine parcels in some of the appellation’s finest lieux-dits, Bonneau became synonymous with long-lived, profoundly complex Grenache-based wines that embodied the soul of the region before modern fashion. His cuvées, particularly Les Célestins and Marie Beurrier, are known for their effortless balance, sensuous texture and haunting aromatics, achieved through meticulous vineyard work and very long, patient élevage in ancient, neutral barrels. Today, bottles bearing the Henri Bonneau name remain benchmarks for traditional Southern Rhône, and the 2013 Marie Beurrier stands as a testament to the domaine’s ability to craft deeply characterful wines even in more demanding vintages.
