Description

Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2011 in magnum is a rare chance to experience one of the Rhône’s most coveted traditional wines in its most age-worthy format. Bottled in 1.5L, this cuvée showcases Bonneau’s unmistakable style: sensual, wild, and deeply rooted in old-school Châteauneuf craftsmanship. Praised by Wine Advocate (90–92 points) for its seductive character, this 2011 is already alluring yet built to reward patient cellaring.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 Cuvée Marie Beurrier shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections that hint at its early evolution while retaining plenty of freshness. The nose is intensely expressive, brimming with kirsch and ripe red cherry layered over notes of bouquet garni, sun‑baked Provençal garrigue, dried herbs, and a distinctly savory edge of bloody meat and game. Subtle hints of leather, warm stones, and spice emerge with air, giving it a complex, old-vine gravitas. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, with that trademark Bonneau texture: velvety, enveloping, and almost hedonistic, yet never heavy. Flavors of sweet red berries, cherry liqueur and raspberry coulis are framed by earthy undertones, roasted herbs and a gentle sanguine note that adds depth. The tannins are fine-grained and integrated, giving a supple, "sexy" mouthfeel that makes the wine disarmingly easy to drink even now. In magnum, the 2011 has very good aging potential; expect it to drink beautifully over the next 10–15 years, gaining more tertiary complexity—leather, truffle, and dried flowers—while preserving its core of fruit.

Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier comes from some of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most prized terroirs, with old-vine Grenache at its core, typically complemented by small amounts of other traditional southern Rhône varieties. The vines are rooted in a patchwork of galets roulés (large rounded stones), sand, and clay-limestone soils that reflect heat and promote excellent ripeness while retaining underlying freshness. Harvesting is done by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly mature, healthy grapes make it into the cellar. True to Henri Bonneau’s famously traditional approach, vinification is long and gentle, with extended aging in old, neutral foudres and barrels, allowing the wine to evolve slowly, develop its wild, savory complexity, and fully express the character of the vintage and terroir without the imprint of new oak.

Food & Serving
This 2011 Marie Beurrier is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, duck confit, herb-crusted roast pork, or game dishes like venison stew. It also shines alongside hearty Provençal cuisine—daube de boeuf, cassoulet, grilled lamb with tapenade, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing alcohol. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, both to let any initial reduction blow off and to allow the wine’s layered aromas of kirsch, garrigue, and savory meat to fully unfurl in the glass, especially given the slower evolution in magnum.

Producer
Henri Bonneau is one of the legendary names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a benchmark producer whose fiercely traditional, small-scale approach has earned almost cult status among Rhône enthusiasts. Working tiny, old parcels often passed down through generations, Bonneau built his reputation on meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and extraordinarily long, patient élevage in old casks—methods that fly in the face of modern fashion yet consistently deliver profound, distinctive wines. Cuvée Marie Beurrier sits among his most sought-after bottlings, often seen as a bridge between his classic Châteauneuf and the ultra-rare Célestins. The domaine’s wines have been celebrated by critics worldwide for their singular personality, longevity, and their unwavering expression of great southern Rhône terroir.
