Description
Henri Bonneau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Marie Beurrier 2005 is a benchmark Southern Rhône red, crafted by one of the region’s most revered and traditional vignerons. Produced in very small quantities and only in strong vintages, this cuvée is prized for its depth, complexity and haunting perfume. The 2005 vintage, from an outstanding year in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, combines classic Bonneau richness with remarkable energy and lift, offering a wine that is both powerful and gracefully mature.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2005 Marie Beurrier shows a luminous, medium to deep ruby core with garnet reflections beginning to form at the rim – a visual hint of its evolving maturity. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: wild strawberries, red cherries and macerated raspberries are intertwined with notes of garrigue herbs, blood orange, and rose petal, supported by hints of smoked meat, leather, and sweet spice. With air, more savory and smoky nuances emerge, gaining in complexity and aromatic depth.
On the palate, this wine is both silky and vibrant, with a beautifully textural mouthfeel. The red-fruited core—cherry, raspberry and red plum—melds with darker berry tones and subtle notes of dried fig, licorice, and tobacco. Fine, ripe tannins provide structure without harshness, while the natural acidity keeps the wine fresh and energetic. The finish is very long, layered and gently sweet-fruited, with lingering echoes of spice, smoke and dried flowers. Now entering a superb drinking window, the 2005 still has the concentration and balance to age gracefully for another decade or more, especially from well-stored bottles.
Production
Cuvée Marie Beurrier is sourced from some of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s finest terroirs, with old-vine Grenache at its core, complemented by small proportions of traditional Rhône varieties such as Mourvèdre, Syrah and others. The vineyards are rooted in classic Châteauneuf soils of galets roulés (rounded river stones), sand, and clay-limestone, which help to regulate temperature and promote slow, even ripening. Harvest is carried out by hand, with rigorous selection of bunches in the vineyard. True to his traditionalist philosophy, Henri Bonneau vinified the wine using long, gentle fermentations in old, neutral vessels, followed by extended aging in a mix of very old foudres and barrels in his cool, atmospheric cellar. There is no rush to bottle; wines are released only when Bonneau judged them harmoniously integrated and ready to express their terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a deeply gastronomic Châteauneuf-du-Pape that shines alongside rich, flavorful dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shoulder with herbs, roast duck, venison, or game birds, as well as stews such as daube provençale or coq au vin. It also works beautifully with truffled dishes, aged hard cheeses, and earthy mushroom preparations. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to preserve its aromatic finesse and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully unfurl its complex bouquet and soften any remaining youthful edges, especially if opened on the younger side of its drinking window.

Bonneau’s legacy continues to shape the region’s reputation, and his bottlings from great vintages like 2005 are considered some of the most profound expressions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir.
