Description

Hennessy VS is one of the world’s most recognized and approachable cognacs, offering a vibrant introduction to the Hennessy style. Crafted from a blend of eaux-de-vie aged for at least two years, it combines youthful energy with the hallmark smoothness the house is known for. First created in 1865, the “Very Special” (VS) designation helped set the standard for modern cognac classifications and remains a benchmark for quality in its category.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hennessy VS shows a bright, golden amber hue with warm copper highlights. The nose opens with bold notes of toasted oak and vanilla, followed by hints of grilled almond, fresh grape, and a touch of spice. Subtle floral tones and a whisper of citrus peel add lift and complexity. On the palate, it is smooth yet assertive, with flavors of caramelized sugar, baking spices, and dried fruit layered over a core of fresh, fruity eaux-de-vie. The texture is supple and rounded, leading into a warming, medium-length finish marked by vanilla, oak, and a gentle spice. While designed to be enjoyed young and vibrant rather than aged in the bottle, it will hold its character well for several years if stored properly.

Production
Hennessy VS is produced in the Cognac region of France, where chalky soils and a temperate maritime climate give the Ugni Blanc grape its ideal balance of freshness and acidity. Grapes are harvested and gently pressed, then the wines are distilled twice in traditional copper pot stills to create clear, aromatic eaux-de-vie. These spirits are then aged in French oak barrels, where they develop color, structure, and complexity. The final cognac is a carefully crafted blend of many different eaux-de-vie, each selected and assembled by Hennessy’s master blender and tasting committee to maintain the house’s consistent style.

Food & Serving
Hennessy VS is highly versatile and ideal for both sipping and mixing. Enjoy it neat or over a large ice cube, or use it as a premium base for cocktails like a classic Sidecar, French 75 (with cognac), or a simple Hennessy & Ginger. It pairs well with flavorful foods such as charcuterie, mature hard cheeses, grilled meats, and desserts with caramel, toffee, or dark chocolate. Serve slightly chilled or at cool room temperature (around 16–20°C / 60–68°F). Decanting is not necessary; the spirit is ready to enjoy straight from the bottle.

Producer
Founded in 1765 by Irishman Richard Hennessy, Hennessy has grown from a small trading house in Cognac into one of the most influential cognac producers in the world. Based in the heart of the Charente region, the house is renowned for its vast library of eaux-de-vie and its mastery of blending, passed down through generations of cellar masters from the Fillioux family. As part of the LVMH group, Hennessy plays a defining role in shaping global appreciation of cognac, with Hennessy VS standing as its most widely known and enjoyed expression.
