Description
Haut-Marbuzet is one of Saint-Estèphe’s most admired names, and in magnum format the 2023 vintage feels especially suited to laying down or sharing at the table. As a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, it combines classic Left Bank structure with the plush, inviting style that has made the estate a benchmark for drinkability as well as longevity.
Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep ruby-purple color with impressive concentration in the glass. On the nose, expect ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, tobacco, and a touch of spice, with the estate’s signature fragrant, polished character coming through early.
The palate is usually full-bodied and layered, balancing firm Saint-Estèphe tannins with generous dark fruit, savory earth, and oak spice. 2023 should have the structure to age well, and in magnum format its evolution will likely be even slower and more graceful, rewarding cellaring over the coming years.
Production
Haut-Marbuzet is located in Saint-Estèphe, on gravelly and clay-limestone soils that suit Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux blends particularly well. The estate is known for a ripeness-focused approach that aims to preserve concentration and aromatic richness, with careful harvesting and traditional vinification used to express both power and elegance.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game, and rich mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 1-2 hours if drinking young to let the aromatics open and the tannins soften.
Producer
Haut-Marbuzet is a historic Saint-Estèphe estate that rose to prominence for producing wines of uncommon charm and quality, helping define the appellation’s modern reputation. Although classified as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel rather than a Grand Cru Classé, it is widely respected by collectors and Bordeaux lovers for its consistency, aging potential, and distinctive style.
