Description
Haut-Marbuzet is one of Saint-Estèphe’s most admired estates, known for producing Bordeaux wines with remarkable richness, polish, and charm. This 2021 Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc to deliver classic Left Bank structure with a more generous, immediately appealing style than many of its peers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a deep ruby color with violet reflections. The nose is refined and expressive, with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum, cedar, tobacco, graphite, and subtle spice, often lifted by a touch of floral freshness.
On the palate, Haut-Marbuzet 2021 is expected to be medium to full-bodied, with firm but well-integrated tannins, fresh acidity, and a core of dark berry fruit balanced by savory mineral notes and oak-derived nuances. The finish is persistent and elegant, suggesting excellent aging potential over the next 8–15 years, and possibly longer in a good cellar.
Production
The estate lies in Saint-Estèphe on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravelly and clay-limestone soils provide excellent drainage while helping preserve freshness and structure in the wines. Grapes are harvested carefully to select fully ripe fruit, then vinified parcel by parcel to preserve the distinct character of the blend. Aging in oak barrels helps build texture, complexity, and the polished style for which the château is known.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck breast, beef tenderloin, game dishes, and mushroom-based recipes, as well as aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Haut-Marbuzet is a historic Saint-Estèphe estate with a strong reputation for producing some of the appellation’s most seductive and generous wines. Although classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel rather than a Grand Cru Classé, it is widely regarded as one of the benchmark properties in the region, celebrated for its consistency, balance, and distinctive style.
