Description

Château Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s most legendary estates and a true benchmark for fine red wine, with 2004 offering a beautifully poised expression of this historic Premier Grand Cru Classé. From its gravelly terroir in Pessac-Léognan, it combines finesse, complexity and remarkable depth, reflecting the timeless style that has made Haut-Brion famous since the 17th century.

Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep garnet core with some evolved ruby tones at the rim, hinting at its maturity. On the nose, expect a layered and graceful bouquet of blackcurrant, plum, cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and subtle earthy notes, with the signature smoky nuance often associated with Haut-Brion. On the palate, it is refined and medium-bodied, with polished tannins, fresh acidity and a core of dark fruit framed by mineral, savory and gently spicy accents. The finish is long and elegant rather than powerful, and the wine should continue to hold well, though it is now in a beautiful drinking window for those who enjoy mature Bordeaux.

Production
Haut-Brion comes from one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive terroirs: deep gravel and sand over clay in Pessac-Léognan, helping the vines ripen evenly while preserving freshness and aromatic precision. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, and vinification is carried out with meticulous selection to preserve the estate’s finesse and complexity.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about 1 hour is recommended if the bottle is still youthful; for a more mature bottle, a gentler decant or just careful opening may be preferable.

Producer
Château Haut-Brion is the oldest of Bordeaux’s Premier Grand Cru Classé estates, with a history dating back centuries and a reputation that helped define the concept of fine wine itself. Located just outside Bordeaux in Pessac, it has long been admired for producing wines of extraordinary elegance, aromatic complexity and longevity, and remains one of the most prestigious names in the region.
