Description
Haut-Batailley is a classic Pauillac that offers all the hallmarks lovers of Left Bank Bordeaux look for: graphite, cassis, cedar, and the firm, structured elegance of a Fifth Growth. The 1982 vintage adds extra appeal, as it comes from one of Bordeaux’s most celebrated years for mature, generous, and long-lived wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 1982 Haut-Batailley would typically show a deep garnet core with softened brick-red edges, reflecting its maturity. Aromas are expected to unfold gradually with blackcurrant, dried plum, tobacco leaf, cedar, leather, and a touch of forest floor, while the palate should be medium-bodied, refined, and layered with lingering notes of cassis, spice, and earthy complexity. At this stage, the wine is likely at or near peak drinking, though well-stored bottles may continue to evolve gracefully for a few more years.
The style is very much Pauillac in character: firm yet polished, with enough structure to support the wine’s mature fruit and savory complexity. Any remaining tannin should feel resolved and integrated, giving way to a long, classic finish.
Production
Haut-Batailley is located in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravel-rich soils help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve the concentration, freshness, and aromatic precision that define the appellation. The vintage was harvested from the estate’s historic vineyard holdings and produced in the traditional Bordeaux manner, with fermentation and aging designed to preserve structure, balance, and the wine’s ageworthy character.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, or mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for a short period if the bottle is showing some reduction or sediment, though very mature bottles may be best opened gently and enjoyed with minimal air.
Producer
Château Haut-Batailley is a long-established Fifth Growth estate in Pauillac, classified in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The property has built a strong reputation for producing reliable, classically styled wines that reflect the power and precision of the appellation, making it a respected name among collectors of traditional Bordeaux.
