Hartenberg, Shiraz 2021

Hartenberg Shiraz 2021 is a South African red with real depth, combining the warmth and spice of Stellenbosch with a polished, elegant style. It offers an inviting mix of dark fruit, pepper and savoury complexity, while showing the structure and balance that have made Shiraz one of the region’s most respected red varieties.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep purple-red colour that hints at its concentration. The nose is intense and appealing, with ripe blackberries and black plums lifted by black pepper, clove and a touch of violet, before notes of cedar, leather and a faint smokiness emerge. The palate is powerful but composed, with dark fruit at the core and layers of spice and subtle earthiness around it. The tannins are ripe and firm, giving grip and length without harshness, while fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and balanced. It already drinks well now, but will reward a few more years in bottle with added complexity and softer texture.

Production
This Shiraz reflects the character of Stellenbosch, where warm growing conditions help the fruit reach full ripeness while cooler influences preserve freshness and definition. The result is a wine with clear regional identity: ripe, spicy and structured, yet still refined and balanced. The grapes are harvested to capture both concentration and natural acidity, and the wine is vinified to preserve its layered fruit, savoury nuance and elegant tannin structure.

Food & Serving
Ideal with roasted meats, game dishes and richly flavoured slow-cooked stews, especially those with herbs or spice. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for about 30-60 minutes if drinking young to let the aromas open and the tannins soften.
