Description
Haas Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg 2023 is a standout dry white from one of Alsace’s most revered terroirs, crafted by the family-run estate of Bernard Haas. Sourced from the steep, granitic slopes of the Schlossberg Grand Cru, this Riesling combines crystalline precision with generous fruit and vibrant acidity. It offers an elegant expression of a historic vineyard that has long been considered one of Alsace’s benchmarks for top-quality Riesling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a bright, pale lemon color with subtle green reflections, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose is pure and focused, opening with aromas of lime zest, ripe lemon, and white peach, layered with notes of green apple, elderflower, and delicate white blossoms. Underneath the fruit, you’ll find a distinct mineral character—wet stone, crushed rock, and a hint of saline—that is typical of Schlossberg’s granite soils.
On the palate, it is dry, precise, and finely structured, with a racy backbone of acidity that carries the flavors long across the tongue. Citrus and stone fruit are joined by nuances of grapefruit pith, fresh herbs, and a subtle smoky, flinty edge. The texture is both taut and slightly silky, giving the wine an elegant, vertical profile. While already accessible in its youth, the 2023 vintage has the concentration and acidity to develop beautifully over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity, honeyed notes, and deeper mineral tones with time in bottle.
Production
The Schlossberg Grand Cru vineyard sits on steep, terraced slopes above Kaysersberg, where poor, granitic soils and excellent drainage force the Riesling vines to root deeply, concentrating flavor and minerality. Cool nights and warm, sunny days help preserve aromatic freshness while ensuring full ripeness. The Haas family farms their modest holdings here with close attention to detail, harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe grapes are selected. In the cellar, the Riesling is gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel (and sometimes in neutral large foudres, depending on the cuvée style), to preserve the purity of fruit and the clear imprint of the Schlossberg terroir. The wine is then aged on fine lees to add texture and complexity, before careful bottling to maintain its precision and freshness.
Food & Serving
This Riesling is a superb match for refined dishes that highlight both freshness and delicacy. Think shellfish platters, seared scallops, poached fish with citrus or beurre blanc, sushi and sashimi, or Alsatian specialties such as choucroute de la mer. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese, fresh cheeses, and subtly spiced Asian cuisine (ginger, lemongrass, light curry). Serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to emphasize its finesse and aromatic lift. In its youth, a brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up, while older bottles should be gently decanted to separate any sediment and allow the more complex aromas to unfold.
Producer
The Haas estate is a true family domaine, passed down through generations and rooted in the village of Kaysersberg in Alsace. Today, Nathalie and Marc Haas are joined by the next generation, Elsa and Dylan, who continue to build on the family’s reputation for crafting precise, characterful wines from their 10 hectares of vines in and around Kaysersberg. With holdings in the renowned Grand Cru Schlossberg, the estate sits among the region’s respected producers, known for wines that faithfully reflect their origin. Their focus on careful vineyard work, modest scale, and a hands-on family approach has earned Haas a reputation for consistently high quality across the range, with their Rieslings in particular often cited as exemplary expressions of their terroir.
