Description

Gut Hermannsberg Riesling Steinberg Großes Gewächs 2020 is a dry, single-vineyard Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most striking sites. Grown on steep volcanic porphyry slopes, it captures the precision, minerality and tension that have made German GG wines a benchmark for world-class dry Riesling. The 2020 vintage was particularly favorable in the Nahe, allowing this Grosses Gewächs to show impressive depth yet surprising approachability even in its youth.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Steinberg GG 2020 is pale straw with greenish reflections, hinting at its youthful energy and freshness. The nose opens with a firm, smoky minerality, almost flinty at first, before gradually revealing layers of citrus—pomelo, lime zest and grapefruit—alongside sour-edged stone fruits such as underripe nectarine and white peach. On the palate, the wine is dry, focused and taut, with a racy, finely etched acidity that slices through the dense, stony core. The volcanic porphyry shows itself through a salty, almost tactile minerality that frames the fruit rather than competing with it. Citrus and stone fruit are joined by hints of herbal spice and a very subtle creaminess from lees contact, giving balance to the linear structure. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering, with lingering notes of citrus peel and wet stone. While the 2020 is already surprisingly open and charming after a bit of air, its structure and mineral backbone suggest an excellent aging potential of 10–15 years, during which it will gain complexity, more depth of fruit and savory tertiary nuances.

Production
The Steinberg vineyard takes its name and character from its geology: steep, stone-rich slopes composed primarily of volcanic porphyry with a thin, poor loess topsoil. This harsh, rocky environment, combined with cooling westerly winds, keeps yields naturally low and allows the Riesling vines—around 40 years old—to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving acidity and aromatic finesse. Harvest is typically carried out by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are selected for this Großes Gewächs. In the cellar, Gut Hermannsberg follows a restrained, terroir-focused approach: gentle pressing, careful clarification of the must and a cool, slow fermentation—often partly in stainless steel and partly in traditional large wooden casks—to retain purity of fruit and highlight the site’s smoky, saline minerality. Extended lees contact adds texture and subtle complexity without masking the vineyard character.

Food & Serving
This Steinberg GG is a superb partner for refined, delicately aromatic cuisine. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as ceviche or sashimi, citrus-marinated sea bass, grilled prawns, steamed shellfish, or simply prepared white fish with herb butter. It also shines alongside classic German fare like poached freshwater fish, veal schnitzel with lemon, and light poultry dishes, as well as vegetable-driven plates featuring asparagus, fennel, or subtly spiced Asian-inspired dishes. Serve chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11 °C (48–52 °F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully emerge. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a carafe to unwind the smoky mineral notes and reveal the full spectrum of citrus and stone-fruit character.

Producer
Gut Hermannsberg is one of Germany’s historically significant Riesling estates, located on the Nahe and founded in the early 20th century as a state domain dedicated to showcasing the region’s finest vineyard sites. Today, it is recognized as a benchmark producer for dry Riesling, with a portfolio of Grosse Lagen that includes some of the most revered steep-slope vineyards along the Nahe. The estate’s philosophy centers on meticulous vineyard work, low yields and minimal-intervention cellar practices to express each site’s unique terroir, particularly its diverse volcanic and slate soils. As a member of the VDP (the German association of elite wine estates), Gut Hermannsberg has played an important role in elevating the reputation of Nahe Rieslings on the international stage, consistently earning high ratings and critical acclaim for their precise, mineral-driven Großes Gewächs wines.
