Description
From Gut Hermannsberg’s famed monopole vineyard, the Hermannsberg Großes Gewächs Reserve 2018 is a Riesling of striking depth and precision. Classified as a Großes Gewächs, it represents the estate’s top dry Riesling, crafted for complexity, longevity, and a pure expression of Nahe terroir. This Reserve bottling marries power with remarkable elegance, echoing the estate’s long tradition of producing finely etched, mineral-driven wines from this historic site.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Hermannsberg Großes Gewächs Reserve shows a bright, shimmering lemon-gold hue with green reflections, hinting at both intensity and freshness. The nose opens with floral nuances—white blossom and acacia—woven together with ripe stone fruit notes of white peach and apricot, lifted by citrus zest and a cool, stony minerality. Subtle hints of crushed slate, herbal spice, and a touch of smoky flint add further complexity as the wine unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, this is a focused, linear Riesling with a strikingly slender, precise structure despite the ripe 2018 vintage. The attack is vibrant, with juicy citrus—lime and grapefruit—wrapped around a core of peach and green apple. A firm spine of acidity keeps everything tightly knit, while the hallmark slate-driven spice and salinity draw out a long, refined finish. The texture is taut rather than opulent, giving the wine a purist, almost crystalline profile. Still youthful, the 2018 Hermannsberg GG Reserve has excellent aging potential: it will continue to gain complexity and tertiary notes—honey, dried herbs, and petrol nuances—over 10–15 years and beyond under proper cellaring.
Production
The Hermannsberg monopole vineyard sits on steep, south and south-west facing slopes above the Nahe River, with poor, stony soils dominated by slate and volcanic rock that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The combination of warm exposure, cool nights, and mineral-rich subsoil gives Riesling from this site its trademark tension and slate-spice. Grapes for the Großes Gewächs Reserve are hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and pristine fruit, with strict selection directly in the vineyard. In the cellar, Gut Hermannsberg works with gentle pressing and spontaneous fermentation, typically in a combination of stainless steel and large traditional German oak (Stück or Doppelstück) to preserve purity while adding subtle textural depth. Extended lees aging refines the structure, enhances mouthfeel, and supports the wine’s impressive capacity to age, before bottling with minimal intervention to capture the vineyard’s character as transparently as possible.
Food & Serving
This dry, mineral-driven Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, especially with refined, subtly aromatic cuisine. It pairs beautifully with seafood such as grilled sea bass, turbot, or scallops, as well as shellfish dishes like prawns, crab, or lobster in light citrus or herb sauces. It also excels with sushi and sashimi, delicately spiced Asian dishes, and classic German pairings like trout with almonds or veal schnitzel. White asparagus with hollandaise, fresh goat cheese, and lightly aged hard cheeses are excellent matches as well. Serve at 9–11°C to highlight its precision and minerality; for maximum expression, especially as the wine matures, consider decanting for 30–60 minutes to allow the aromatics and slate-driven complexity to fully open.
Producer
Gut Hermannsberg, located in the Nahe region of Germany, is one of the country’s historically important Riesling estates, with roots dating back to the early 20th century. Originally founded as a Royal Prussian estate, it quickly gained a reputation for producing some of Germany’s finest dry Rieslings from its exceptional, steep vineyards along the Nahe. Today, Gut Hermannsberg is celebrated for its rigorous vineyard work, low yields, and uncompromising focus on terroir-driven wines, particularly from its monopole Hermannsberg site and other top-rated GG vineyards. The estate is a benchmark producer for Nahe Riesling, regularly recognized in leading German wine guides and by international critics for its precise, mineral, and age-worthy Grosses Gewächs bottlings.
