Description

Gulfi Valcanzjria 2023 is a characterful Sicilian white that marries the aromatic charm of Chardonnay with the tense, mineral backbone of the native Carricante grape. Crafted by Azienda Gulfi, it offers both immediate pleasure and a distinctly Mediterranean sense of place. This cuvée showcases the evolution of Sicilian white wines from simple, sun‑kissed bottles to refined, terroir-driven expressions with real complexity and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Valcanzjria 2023 shows a bright straw-yellow color with subtle green reflections, hinting at freshness and vitality. The nose first opens with the floral and gently opulent side of Chardonnay: scents of yellow and white blossoms, acacia honey, a touch of beeswax, pineapple and butter caramel, layered over ripe fruit notes reminiscent of apple compote, preserved pears and candied citrus peel. With a bit of air, the wine gradually reveals a different facet: the lush fruit recedes and more zesty, savory tones emerge. On the palate, the first impression is surprisingly soft, silky and caressing, yet the wine remains confidently dry. The Carricante steps forward with lively acidity and fine, stony minerality, bringing notes of pink grapefruit zest, fresh green herbs such as thyme and sage, and a distinct savory edge. Flavors of white pepper, balsamic mint and a mouthwatering saline streak linger on a long, focused finish. While already very enjoyable in its youth, the structure and acidity suggest it can evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years, gaining complexity and integrating its floral and mineral dimensions even further.

Production
Gulfi sources the fruit for Valcanzjria from high-quality vineyards in Sicily, where sun-drenched days, cooling breezes and mineral-rich soils combine to give both ripeness and vibrant acidity. The island’s limestone and volcanic influences contribute to the pronounced salinity and tension in the finished wine, particularly through the Carricante component. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of healthy, perfectly ripe bunches and to preserve aromatic delicacy. In the cellar, Chardonnay and Carricante are vinified with a gentle touch to protect their floral and citrus notes—cool fermentation in stainless steel and a focus on preserving freshness and purity, rather than overt oak, allow the natural character of each variety and the Sicilian terroir to shine.

Food & Serving
This versatile white pairs beautifully with Mediterranean seafood—think grilled prawns, seared scallops, octopus salads and simply prepared white fish with olive oil, lemon and herbs. It is also an excellent match for grilled vegetables, soft cheeses, herb-infused poultry and pasta dishes with light cream or lemon-based sauces. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), to highlight its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief opening in the glass or a short 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help the wine unfold its transition from ripe, floral notes to its more herbal, mineral side.

Producer
Azienda Gulfi, based in Chiaramonte Gulfi in southeastern Sicily, has become one of the reference producers for characterful, terroir-expressive Sicilian wines. Founded on a deep respect for local varieties and traditional farming, Gulfi has long championed native grapes such as Nero d’Avola and Carricante, along with thoughtful use of international varieties like Chardonnay. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work, often favoring organic or low-intervention practices, and for bottlings that clearly reflect their distinct sites. Through wines like Valcanzjria, Gulfi has helped elevate Sicily’s reputation from a source of bulk wine to a region capable of producing some of Italy’s most exciting and distinctive whites and reds.
