Description

E. Guigal’s La Turque is one of the most coveted wines of Côte-Rôtie, a benchmark bottling from one of the Rhône’s greatest estates. Drawn from steep, south-facing parcels in Côte Brune, it combines power, exotic aromatics, and remarkable depth, with the 1999 vintage standing out as a particularly sought-after expression for collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1999 La Turque still shows impressive vitality, with a deep, concentrated color that hints at its intensity. The nose is layered and luxurious, opening with dark berries, blackcurrant, and ripe cherry, then unfolding into violet, smoke, coffee, truffle, and a subtle savory, almost gamey nuance. The palate is dense yet beautifully polished, with silky texture, mature tannins, and a fresh line of acidity that keeps the dark fruit lifted and focused. Long, complex, and endlessly persistent on the finish, it leaves behind spice, mineral notes, and a lingering earthy depth. While already drinking beautifully, it should continue to hold for years in proper cellar conditions.

Production
La Turque is made primarily from Syrah with a small proportion of Viognier, following the traditional practice of Côte-Rôtie. The grapes are hand-harvested from extremely steep terraces in Côte Brune, where schist soils contribute structure, power, and complexity. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and the wine is then aged in new French oak barrels for up to 42 months, with only the most concentrated and balanced lots selected for the final blend.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb, venison, duck breast, beef Wellington, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting is recommended if opening now to allow the wine to fully express its layered aromatics and texture.

Producer
E. Guigal is one of the most legendary names in the Rhône, renowned for producing benchmark wines that have helped define the reputation of Côte-Rôtie worldwide. The estate’s ‘La La’ wines are among the region’s most admired bottlings, and La Turque is often considered the most exotic and seductive of the trio. Guigal’s uncompromising standards in vineyard selection, élevage, and oak aging have earned the house an enduring place among France’s elite producers.
