Description
Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 2003 is one of the most powerful and sought-after expressions of Syrah from the Northern Rhône, sourced from E. Guigal’s famed single vineyard on the steep slopes of Côte-Rôtie. As part of the legendary La La trio alongside La Mouline and La Turque, it stands as a benchmark for the appellation and for world-class Syrah.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Landonne shows remarkable depth and concentration, with a dark, almost opaque core and an intensely expressive bouquet. Expect aromas of black cherry, blackberry, violet, black pepper, olive tapenade, smoked bacon, and crushed slate, evolving over time into truffle, leather, tobacco, and forest floor.
On the palate, the wine is dense, structured, and profoundly mineral, with ripe tannins, vivid acidity, and a tightly packed core of dark fruit. The 2003 vintage’s ripeness adds breadth and warmth, while Guigal’s long élevage layers in polish and complexity. This is a wine built for the long haul and has exceptional aging potential, continuing to unfold beautifully over decades.
Production
La Landonne comes from a celebrated single vineyard in Côte-Rôtie, where steep south-facing slopes and schist-rich soils provide ideal conditions for Syrah. The site’s harsh, terraced terrain encourages low yields and concentrated fruit, and the wine is made entirely from Syrah, giving it a more powerful and terroir-driven profile than blends from the appellation.
Harvesting is done by hand on these challenging slopes, with careful selection to preserve quality. Vinification is followed by Guigal’s signature extended oak aging, which adds structure, texture, and aromatic complexity without obscuring the site’s intense mineral character.
Food & Serving
This is a wine best served with richly flavored dishes such as grilled lamb, venison, beef ribeye, braised short ribs, or game birds with earthy sauces. Mature hard cheeses and truffle-based dishes also make excellent companions. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant several hours before serving if the bottle is still youthful; for an older bottle, a gentler decant is recommended to separate sediment and allow the aromas to open gradually.
Producer
E. Guigal is one of the most important producers in the Rhône Valley, founded in 1946 and renowned for elevating the reputation of Côte-Rôtie on the international stage. The estate’s La La wines—La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne—have become iconic, widely regarded as some of the finest Syrah-based wines in the world. Guigal’s consistent quality, meticulous élevage, and deep commitment to terroir have earned the house exceptional critical acclaim and collector status.
