Description

E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 2003 is one of the most iconic single-vineyard Syrahs from the Northern Rhône, known for its power, precision, and remarkable depth. Made entirely from Syrah grown on the iron-rich, limestone-clay soils of Côte Brune, it captures the dark, mineral-driven character that has made La Landonne a benchmark wine for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, almost black-ruby colour that hints at its concentration. The nose is intensely layered, offering black plum, liquorice, dried herbs, roasted coffee, and a distinctive mineral edge. On the palate, it is rich and velvety, with flavours of dark berries, damp earth, thyme, and spice, all carried by a tightly packed yet graceful texture. Despite its density, the wine never feels heavy; instead, it flows across the palate with balance and energy. The finish is long and persistent, unfolding with notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and black pepper. This is a wine with serious aging potential, and in a great cellar it can continue to evolve beautifully for many years.

Production
La Landonne comes from one of the most celebrated lieux-dits in Côte-Rôtie, where steep terraces and iron-rich clay-limestone soils contribute to the wine’s signature structure and mineral intensity. The grapes are harvested by hand, selected carefully, then fermented with a long maceration under temperature control to extract colour, tannin, and complexity. The wine is then matured for around 42 months in new French oak barrels, a lengthy élevage that adds polish, depth, and impressive ageworthiness.

Food & Serving
This is a powerful, food-friendly wine that pairs best with equally flavourful dishes such as grilled lamb, slow-braised beef, venison, game birds, or rich mushroom dishes. It also works beautifully with hard, aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and give it about an hour of gentle decanting to help the aromatics open and the tannins soften.

Producer
E. Guigal is one of the defining producers of the Rhône Valley, founded in 1946 and now recognised worldwide for its exceptional dedication to quality and terroir expression. The estate has helped elevate the reputation of Côte-Rôtie through a series of legendary single-vineyard wines, including La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne. Known for meticulous winemaking and long, patient élevage, Guigal has become a reference point for Northern Rhône Syrah.
