Description
Gruaud Larose 2020 is a distinguished Saint-Julien classified growth, admired for its classic Médoc structure, depth, and refinement. With a Cabernet-led blend and the pedigree of one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates, it offers both immediate appeal and the promise of graceful evolution in bottle.
Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep ruby-garnet color with youthful vibrancy. Aromatically, expect layered notes of blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar, graphite, violets, and subtle tobacco, framed by refined oak spice and mineral undertones.
On the palate, it is poised and concentrated, with polished tannins, lively freshness, and a core of black fruit accented by savory earth, cocoa, and a touch of pencil shavings. The finish is long and precise, with the structure to age beautifully for 15 years or more, often gaining complexity, silkiness, and tertiary notes over time.
Production
Gruaud Larose’s vineyards lie in the gravelly soils of Saint-Julien, where excellent drainage and the tempering influence of the Gironde help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve ripeness and balance. The estate’s plantings are centered on Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, and fruit is typically harvested parcel by parcel to preserve precision and site expression. Vinification is carried out with a focus on extracting depth and structure while maintaining elegance, followed by careful maturation in French oak barrels.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for classic dishes such as roast lamb, entrecôte, beef fillet, duck breast, or game with rich sauces. It also works beautifully with mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open and soften.
Producer
Château Gruaud Larose has a long-standing reputation as one of Saint-Julien’s benchmark estates and was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Known for producing wines of consistency, longevity, and traditional Médoc character, the estate has earned considerable respect among Bordeaux enthusiasts for its reliability and classic style.
