Description

Gruaud Larose 2009 is a classic Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most respected Second Growth estates, combining structure, depth, and polished ripeness in a truly impressive vintage. Built on Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it captures the balance and longevity that have made Gruaud Larose a benchmark name in the Médoc since the 18th century.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby to garnet color with excellent concentration and youthful brightness for its age. The nose is expressive and layered, with blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, and subtle floral and spicy notes unfolding over time. On the palate, it is full-bodied and firmly structured, yet the 2009 vintage brings generous fruit and a supple, rounded texture. Expect dark berry flavors, cassis, savory earth, fine-grained tannins, and a long, persistent finish. It has strong aging potential and will continue to evolve gracefully for many years.

Production
Sourced from Gruaud Larose’s gravelly Saint-Julien vineyards, the wine benefits from the Left Bank’s excellent drainage and the region’s temperate Atlantic influence, which supports slow, even ripening. The blend is vinified with traditional Bordeaux precision, typically involving careful parcel selection, fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, and aging in French oak to build complexity while preserving the estate’s signature elegance and structure.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, venison, and mushroom-based dishes, as well as hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking now to allow the aromatics and texture to open fully.

Producer
Château Gruaud Larose is one of the historic names of Saint-Julien and has been classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Known for producing powerful yet refined wines with excellent cellaring potential, the estate has long been regarded as a reference point for classic Left Bank Cabernet blends. Its reputation is built on consistency, pedigree, and an unmistakable sense of place.
