Description
Griesel & Compagnie Riesling Réserve perpétuelle Brut Nature Exquisit 2013–2017 is a finely crafted German sparkling wine that showcases the precision and vibrancy of Riesling in a truly artisanal style. Produced as a multi-vintage cuvée from 2013 to 2017, it is made in a Brut Nature style, with no dosage, allowing the pure character of grape and terroir to shine through. This ‘réserve perpétuelle’ (perpetual reserve) approach, inspired by the solera system, layers complexity and maturity over time, offering a sparkling wine of remarkable depth and individuality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine typically shows a pale lemon to light gold color with fine, persistent beads that hint at extended aging on the lees. The nose is expressive and detailed, with aromas of green and yellow apple, ripe citrus, quince and white peach, interwoven with notes of brioche, roasted nuts, wet stone and gentle herbal nuances—hallmarks of Riesling combined with long lees contact.
On the palate, it is dry and taut, with the Brut Nature style emphasizing racy, linear acidity and a firmly mineral backbone. Expect flavors of lemon zest, green apple, pear and mirabelle, complemented by subtle pastry, almond, and a saline, chalky edge that adds length and tension. The multi-vintage reserve base contributes a layered, almost vinous complexity and a creamy mousse that balances the electric freshness. Enjoyable now for its energy and precision, it also has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over several more years in bottle, gaining further nutty and toasty nuances while retaining its core of Riesling fruit.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected Riesling parcels along the Hessische Bergstraße, the wine reflects a cool-climate terroir of mixed soils—often loess, limestone and clay—bringing both vibrancy and a clear mineral impression to the finished cuvée. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve acidity and varietal character, followed by gentle pressing and a primary fermentation in stainless steel and/or neutral vessels to maintain purity of fruit. The ‘réserve perpétuelle’ system blends wines from multiple vintages (2013–2017 in this release), building a continuous reserve that is topped up each year, adding complexity and textural depth. Second fermentation takes place in bottle using the traditional method, with extended aging on the lees before disgorgement and no dosage, resulting in a Brut Nature sparkling Riesling of precision, tension and layered nuance.
Food & Serving
This Riesling Brut Nature is an excellent partner for refined, mineral-driven cuisine. Pair it with oysters, scallops, sushi and sashimi, or subtly prepared white fish such as sole or cod; it also works beautifully with fresh goat cheese, ceviche, lightly spiced Asian dishes and vegetable tempura. Its acidity and dryness make it a fine match for charcuterie and lightly smoked fish as well. Serve well chilled at around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). A brief, gentle opening in the glass is usually sufficient for this style—decanting is not necessary, but pouring into proper tulip-shaped sparkling wine glasses will help the nuanced aromas unfold.
Producer
Griesel & Compagnie is a modern, quality-focused sparkling wine specialist based in the Hessische Bergstraße, one of Germany’s smaller and lesser-known yet increasingly exciting wine regions. Founded with the ambition to craft serious, terroir-driven Sekte that can stand alongside top traditional-method sparkling wines, Griesel has helped put the region on the map for premium bubbles. The estate works closely with select vineyard sites and emphasizes meticulous handwork, low yields and extended aging on the lees. Through innovative practices such as perpetual reserve blends and a commitment to dry, precise styles, Griesel & Compagnie has become a notable reference for contemporary German sparkling wine and a key voice in the renaissance of high-end Sekt.
