Description

Griesel & Compagnie Riesling Brut Nature Prestige 2020 shows just how refined German Riesling can be when it’s transformed into serious sparkling wine. Crafted as a Brut Nature, it is bone-dry, tense and precise, letting the grape and the long lees aging do all the talking. Sourced from carefully selected sites along the Hessische Bergstraße, this prestige cuvée continues Griesel’s reputation for elevating German Sekt to true fine-wine status.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Brut Nature Prestige is pale straw with a fine, persistent mousse that forms a delicate, creamy bead. The nose is lifted and complex, recalling the house style seen in earlier vintages: floral notes of white blossom, lilac and lily-of-the-valley, layered with quince jelly, bitter orange and bergamot. Savory, bakery-driven tones unfold with air—think warm poppy-seed rolls, sweet yeast dumpling, roasted hazelnut and a hint of tahini—underpinned by herbal and resinous nuances of dried hay, rosemary and a whisper of new leather. On the palate, the wine is taut, dry and elegant, with the zero-dosage style sharpening the natural clarity of Riesling. A gentle creaminess from extensive lees contact softens the firm backbone of acidity, giving a mouthfilling, almost custard-like texture reminiscent of crème brûlée, but without any residual sweetness. Citrus oils, quince, toasted nuts and a subtle, well-integrated touch of oak carry through to a long, salty-mineral finish. Enjoy now for its energy and finesse, or cellar for 5–8 years to allow further complexity and tertiary notes to emerge.

Production
The fruit for this Riesling Brut Nature Prestige is drawn from select vineyards on the Hessische Bergstraße, where steep, well-drained slopes and mixed soils of loess, sandstone and slate provide both ripeness and vibrant acidity—ideal conditions for top-quality Sekt. Grapes are hand-harvested at carefully judged maturity to balance flavor concentration with freshness. After gentle pressing, the base wine is fermented with meticulous temperature control, followed by traditional method secondary fermentation in bottle. Extended aging on the lees adds texture, autolytic complexity and a fine mousse, while the Brut Nature disgorgement, with little to no dosage, ensures the character of Riesling and terroir shines through with clarity and precision.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile, gastronomic sparkling wine that shines at the table. Pair it with briny oysters, sashimi, ceviche or simple grilled fish to highlight its minerality, or match it with roasted poultry, veal schnitzel, lightly smoked charcuterie or alpine cheeses to play to its nutty, autolytic depth. It also works beautifully with Asian-inspired dishes that feature citrus, ginger or sesame. Serve well chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 10–15 minutes in a decanter or in the glass as it warms slightly will help the aromatics unfurl, but extended decanting is not necessary.

Producer
Griesel & Compagnie is one of Germany’s most exciting modern Sekt houses, based in the historic town of Bensheim on the Hessische Bergstraße. Founded with a clear focus on bottle-fermented sparkling wines, the estate under winemaker Niko Brandner has quickly gained a reputation for precision, ambition and a rigorously quality-driven approach. By working with top vineyard sites, low yields, hand harvesting and long lees aging, Griesel has helped reposition German Sekt from simple sparkling wine to a serious, terroir-expressive category. Their prestige bottlings, especially from Riesling, are now recognized as benchmarks for the region and are frequently cited among Germany’s top artisanal sparkling wines.
