Description

Griesel & Compagnie Grande Cuvée Réserve Brut Nature Exquisit 2014 is a serious German vintage sparkling wine crafted in a style that clearly nods to Champagne, yet speaks with a distinctly Hessische Bergstraße accent. Made from the classic trio of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and Pinot Meunier (Schwarzriesling), it is a meticulously dry, zero-dosage Sekt for those who appreciate precision and finesse. As a vintage Réserve, this cuvée benefits from extended maturation, showcasing just how far top German sparkling wine has come on the world stage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a finely tuned, luminous straw-gold color with delicate copper highlights, crowned by an elegant, persistent mousse and a fine, bead-like stream of bubbles. The nose is complex and restrained at first, opening gradually into layers of citrus zest, green and yellow apple, quince, and white blossom, underpinned by brioche, roasted hazelnut, and a subtle chalky-mineral note from the long aging on the lees. On the palate, the Brut Nature style is immediately evident: bone-dry, taut and linear, yet with impressive depth and texture. Crisp acidity and a sleek, saline minerality frame flavors of lemon curd, crunchy orchard fruit, tart pear skin and a hint of wild red berry from the Pinot components. The extended lees contact brings a creamy, brioche-like mid-palate and hints of toasted almond and pastry, while the finish is long, pure and mouthwatering, with a lingering note of citrus pith and wet stone. Already beautifully resolved given its 2014 vintage, this Grande Cuvée Réserve still has the structure to evolve gracefully for several more years, gaining further nutty and tertiary complexity.

Production
Grown on the slopes of the Hessische Bergstraße, this cuvée reflects a cool-climate terroir where vineyards benefit from sheltered hillsides, moderating forest influences and soils composed of loess, clay and limestone-rich sediments. These conditions deliver naturally vibrant acidity and a distinct mineral edge—ideal for premium traditional-method sparkling wine. The Chardonnay, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier) are typically harvested by hand at carefully chosen ripeness levels to preserve freshness and aromatic precision. In the cellar, the base wines are vinified separately, often in a mix of stainless steel and older wood to build both purity and texture before blending. The second fermentation takes place in bottle, followed by extended aging on the lees for several years to gain complexity, fine mousse and autolytic character. As a Brut Nature, the wine is disgorged without dosage, allowing the terroir, vintage and patient élevage to speak clearly and without adornment.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic sparkling wine that shines at the table. Its brisk acidity and chiselled profile make it an excellent partner for oysters, shellfish platters, ceviche, sushi and sashimi, as well as delicately poached white fish with citrus or beurre blanc. It also pairs beautifully with fine charcuterie, poultry terrines, light veal dishes, roasted root vegetables and subtly truffled dishes, along with aged hard cheeses or a simple Comté. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), to allow the complexity of the nose and palate to unfold. A brief decant in a carafe, or simply pouring into larger white wine or tulip-shaped sparkling glasses, can help the wine open up, especially if served soon after popping the cork.

Producer
Griesel & Compagnie is one of the new-wave names redefining what German Sekt can be, focusing exclusively on high-quality, traditional-method sparkling wines. Based in the Hessische Bergstraße, a small and historically lesser-known region, the estate has quickly earned a reputation for precision, low-intervention winemaking and ambitious élevage, particularly with long lees aging and minimal or zero dosage styles. By working closely with carefully selected vineyards and embracing meticulous handwork in both vineyard and cellar, Griesel & Compagnie has become a benchmark for modern German sparkling wine, regularly attracting critical attention and helping to elevate the status of German Sekt on the international stage.
