Description
Griesel & Compagnie Blanc de Noirs Brut Tradition 2022 is a finely crafted German sparkling wine from the emerging Hessische Bergstraße region, made entirely from red grapes but vinified as a white. Combining Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Schwarzriesling (Pinot Meunier), it offers a refined, terroir-driven expression that rivals many classic sparkling regions. This cuvée captures Griesel & Compagnie’s modern, quality-focused approach to traditional-method sparkling wine in Germany.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Blanc de Noirs Brut Tradition shows a pale, shimmering straw color with delicate copper highlights and a fine, persistent mousse. The nose is inviting and precise, offering aromas of red apple skin, white cherry, brioche, citrus zest and a touch of almond, underpinned by subtle notes of wild berries and chalky minerality.
On the palate, the wine is dry, tense and remarkably elegant, with a vibrant acidity that keeps the red-fruited richness in perfect check. Flavors of crunchy pear, raspberry sorbet, lemon curd and toasted hazelnut unfold over a linear, mineral-driven backbone. The texture is creamy yet energetic, with well-integrated mousse and a long, saline finish. While beautifully drinkable now for its freshness and precision, this 2022 has the structure to evolve gracefully for another 3–6 years, gaining more autolytic complexity and depth.
Production
The grapes for Griesel & Compagnie Blanc de Noirs Brut Tradition 2022 come from carefully selected vineyards in the Hessische Bergstraße, a cool-climate region characterized by loess, limestone and sandstone soils that add finesse and mineral tension to the wines. Spätburgunder and Schwarzriesling are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to balance fruit intensity and high natural acidity—essential for serious sparkling wine. After gentle pressing of whole clusters to obtain only the purest, lightly colored juice, the base wines are fermented in stainless steel and, in part, in neutral vessels to preserve clarity and subtle complexity. The cuvée then undergoes secondary fermentation in bottle using the traditional method, followed by extended lees aging to build texture, fine mousse and a delicate brioche character before disgorgement and dosage adjusted to a dry Brut style.
Food & Serving
This Blanc de Noirs Brut Tradition pairs beautifully with refined yet versatile dishes: think oysters and shellfish, sashimi, trout tartare, or classic seafood platters. It is equally at home alongside poultry terrine, charcuterie, lightly smoked salmon, soft cheeses (such as brie or camembert) and delicate mushroom dishes. Serve well-chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its freshness and precision. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass or a quick splash into a chilled carafe is enough to let the wine open up; extended decanting is not necessary, but allowing it to warm slightly in the glass will reveal additional layers of fruit and brioche complexity.
Producer
Griesel & Compagnie is one of the driving forces behind Germany’s new wave of high-quality, traditional-method sparkling wines. Based in the Hessische Bergstraße—a small but promising region often overshadowed by its larger neighbors—the estate has quickly earned a reputation for precision, freshness and terroir transparency in Sekt. With a strong focus on cool-climate grape varieties, meticulous vineyard work and minimal-intervention cellar practices, Griesel & Compagnie crafts sparkling wines that emphasize fine mousse, mineral tension and gastronomic versatility. Their Blanc de Noirs bottlings, in particular, have helped position the estate as a serious reference for German sparkling wine beyond the country’s borders.
