Description

Grans-Fassian’s 1983 Leiwener Klostergarten Riesling Eiswein Goldkapsel is a rare Mosel dessert wine from one of Germany’s most celebrated historic vintages. Crafted from Riesling grapes harvested in the renowned Klostergarten vineyard in Leiwen, it combines remarkable sweetness with the vibrant acidity that gives fine Eiswein its longevity. Now a mature collector’s bottle, it offers an evocative taste of Mosel winemaking from the early 1980s.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its age and concentration. Its expressive bouquet layers ripe peach, apricot and mango with honeyed tones, vanilla and subtle spicy nuances. On the palate, it is rich, luscious and full-bodied, with a refreshing seam of acidity balancing the sweetness. Citrus notes emerge through the long, graceful finish, adding lift and complexity. At more than four decades old, this is a mature Riesling Eiswein whose condition will depend on its storage history. Properly cellared bottles may continue to evolve, though this wine is already at an intriguing stage for collectors and lovers of mature sweet Riesling.

Production
The grapes come from Leiwener Klostergarten in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, where steep vineyard sites and a cool climate help Riesling retain its essential acidity. Eiswein is made from grapes left on the vine until they freeze naturally, concentrating sugars, aromas and flavour as the frozen water is separated during pressing. The resulting wine is intensely concentrated yet naturally balanced, and the Goldkapsel presentation further underlines its special status.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This Eiswein is an elegant match for fruit-based desserts, peach or apricot tarts, crème brûlée and blue or washed-rind cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although carefully opening and allowing the bottle a few minutes in the glass can help reveal its mature aromas.

Producer
Grans-Fassian is a respected Mosel producer based in Leiwen, a village known for its distinguished Riesling vineyards. The estate’s wines reflect the region’s classic balance of ripe fruit, sweetness and pronounced acidity. This 1983 Leiwener Klostergarten Riesling Eiswein Goldkapsel is a particularly distinctive example, combining a renowned vineyard origin, a notable vintage and the rarity of a well-preserved mature dessert wine.
