Description

Grand Veneur Vieilles Vignes 2007 is a powerful, old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape that showcases the depth and longevity of a truly great southern Rhône vintage. Crafted from 50–100+ year-old vines and aged for 18 months in small oak barrels, it is built for complexity, structure and long-term cellaring. This cuvée, first introduced in 2006, has quickly become one of the estate’s flagship bottlings and is considered among the most ageworthy wines of the 2007 vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2007 Vieilles Vignes shows a dense, deep purple colour, hinting at its concentration and youthfulness even at maturity. The nose is intense yet refined, with layered aromas of sun-warmed black cherries and kirsch, floral notes of lavender, hints of wild herbs, and subtle spice. Underneath, you’ll find more savoury tones of licorice and graphite that add complexity and an almost mineral edge. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured Châteauneuf-du-Pape with impressive power balanced by remarkable finesse. Ripe Grenache brings generous, sweet red and black fruit, Mourvèdre contributes structure, darker tones and a spicy, gamey nuance, while Syrah adds colour, freshness and a gently peppery backbone. Tannins are firm yet polished, and the finish is long, layered and persistent. This wine was made to age: originally recommended to rest 3–4 years after release, it has the structure to evolve beautifully over 25–30 years from vintage, developing more truffle, leather and dried herb notes with time in bottle.

Production
Sourced from venerable old vines between 50 and over 100 years of age, Grand Veneur Vieilles Vignes comes from some of the estate’s best-exposed parcels in the sun-drenched terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône. The warm Mediterranean climate, stony soils and famous galets roulés (rounded pebbles) help to produce grapes of great concentration and ripeness, while old vines naturally limit yields, intensifying flavour. The blend is 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, all carefully harvested to optimal maturity. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in small oak barrels, a regimen that polishes the tannins, builds texture and adds subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit, resulting in a wine of both power and elegance.

Food & Serving
This is a commanding red that shines alongside rich, flavourful cuisine. Think slow-braised lamb shanks, roast beef, game dishes such as venison or wild boar, and hearty stews like daube provençale. It also pairs beautifully with duck breast, truffle-infused dishes, aged hard cheeses and earthy mushroom preparations. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. For younger bottles or if opened on the firmer side, decanting for 1–2 hours is highly recommended to allow the wine to fully open; well-aged bottles should be handled gently and decanted briefly, mainly to remove sediment.

Producer
Domaine Grand Veneur is part of the highly regarded Alain Jaume estate, a family-run house with roots in the Rhône Valley dating back to the early 19th century and a modern domaine established in the 1970s. Based in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the family has built a reputation for crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines that combine richness with finesse. Their work in the vineyards, including careful farming of old-vine parcels, and meticulous attention in the cellar have made Grand Veneur one of the standout producers in the appellation. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée, introduced in 2006, quickly attracted critical acclaim and is now recognized as one of the estate’s most prestigious and ageworthy bottlings.
