Description
Grand Puy Lacoste 2021 is a classic Pauillac with the depth and structure that have made this Fifth Growth estate a favorite among Bordeaux lovers. Built on a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend with Merlot for added roundness, it captures the power, elegance, and longevity that define top wines from this part of the Médoc.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby color with purple highlights when young. The nose is expected to offer blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, and subtle notes of tobacco and spice, reflecting the hallmark profile of Pauillac.
On the palate, it should be firm and focused, with ripe dark fruit, refined tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish. While approachable with aeration in its youth, this is a wine built for aging and should develop greater complexity over the next 10–20 years, with classic tertiary notes of leather, cigar box, and earth emerging over time.
Production
Grand Puy Lacoste comes from gravelly Pauillac terroir, where well-drained soils and the Atlantic-influenced climate favor Cabernet Sauvignon, allowing it to ripen slowly and fully. The vineyard’s gravel and clay components contribute both structure and freshness, while careful harvesting ensures grapes are picked at optimal maturity.
Vinification is carried out with an emphasis on precision and traditional Bordeaux know-how, typically involving parcel-by-parcel selection and aging in French oak to support the wine’s natural tannins and aromatic complexity. The result is a balanced, ageworthy expression of the estate’s distinctive style.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled ribeye, duck breast, venison, and mushroom-based dishes. It also works well with hard aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open and soften.
