Description
Grand Puy Ducasse 2021 is a classic Pauillac that delivers the structure, depth, and Cabernet-driven character fans of Bordeaux look for. As a 5ème Grand Cru Classé from the historic 1855 classification, it carries both pedigree and the unmistakable identity of one of the Médoc’s most revered appellations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby color with youthful purple reflections. The nose is marked by blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, and subtle tobacco, with a touch of spice and pencil shavings that speaks to its Pauillac origins.
The palate is precise and firm, with ripe dark fruit framed by fine tannins and a fresh, mineral backbone. Expect a balanced, elegant profile rather than overt power, with the structure to develop gracefully over time. While approachable with adequate cellaring, this vintage should gain complexity over the next 8–15 years, depending on storage conditions.
Production
Grand Puy Ducasse comes from gravelly Pauillac terroir on the left bank of Bordeaux, where well-drained soils and the nearby Gironde estuary help produce wines with concentration, freshness, and age-worthy tannins. The estate’s vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot used to add roundness and breadth. Vinification is typically carried out with careful parcel selection, fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, and aging in French oak to enhance structure and complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, ribeye steak, beef Wellington, duck breast, or hard aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to help the wine open up and soften its tannins.
Producer
Château Grand Puy Ducasse is a long-established Pauillac estate with roots tracing back to the 18th century. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, it has maintained a strong reputation for producing refined, cellar-worthy wines that express the classic power and elegance of Pauillac. Its standing in the region makes it a respected name among lovers of traditional Bordeaux.
