Description

Gramenon La Papesse Côtes du Rhône 2022 is a pure, expressive Grenache that captures the soulful side of the southern Rhône. Made by the revered natural wine estate Gramenon, this cuvée combines depth, finesse, and drinkability in a way that feels both authentic and quietly luxurious. It’s a standout choice for those who appreciate artisan winemaking and characterful reds that speak clearly of their origin. La Papesse is distinguished by its old-vine Grenache, grown at higher altitudes than most Côtes du Rhône, giving the wine an unusual freshness and lift. Crafted with minimal intervention and a light touch in the cellar, it offers a more refined, almost Burgundian expression of Grenache rather than a heavy, sun-baked style. Since the 1990s, Gramenon has helped redefine what Côtes du Rhône can be, proving the appellation is capable of producing wines of real nuance, energy, and longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Papesse 2022 typically shows a luminous, medium ruby color with hints of garnet at the rim — vibrant rather than dense, reflecting its finesse-driven style. The nose is perfumed and inviting: ripe red berries (wild strawberry, raspberry), red cherry, and blood orange mingle with dried herbs, garrigue, rose petals, and a subtle touch of spice and earth. With air, more complexity emerges — hints of licorice, white pepper, and a delicate mineral edge. On the palate, the wine is silky and graceful, with juicy red fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and a lively, mouthwatering acidity. It’s medium-bodied but deep, carrying flavors of cherry, raspberry coulis, pomegranate, and gentle spice, supported by savory herbal notes and a stony, almost saline finish. The balance of fruit purity and structure makes it highly charming now, yet it has the concentration and natural freshness to evolve. While delicious in its youth over the next 2–4 years, careful cellaring should reward you for up to 8–10 years, with more tertiary notes of underbrush, dried flowers, and subtle leather emerging over time.

Production
La Papesse comes from old-vine Grenache planted in the cooler, higher-altitude sectors of the southern Rhône Valley, where limestone and sandy clay soils help preserve acidity and aromatic definition. This terroir gives the wine its lifted, floral profile and fine structure rather than sheer power. Gramenon farms organically and biodynamically, with a strong focus on soil health and biodiversity; all work in the vineyard is done by hand, from pruning to the selective harvest of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, the philosophy is minimal intervention: grapes are often partially destemmed depending on the vintage, fermented with native yeasts, and allowed a gentle, slow maceration to extract fine tannins rather than harsh grip. Aging typically takes place in a mix of neutral vessels (such as older barrels or large foudres), and the use of sulfur is kept very low, resulting in a vivid, textural wine that faithfully reflects its origin.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that shines with Mediterranean and bistro-style dishes. Try it with roast lamb with herbs, grilled pork, duck breast, or chargrilled vegetables and ratatouille; it’s also excellent with mushroom dishes, charcuterie, and semi-soft cheeses like Tomme, Comté, or aged Gouda. For spicier fare, it pairs nicely with Provençal stews, Moroccan tagines with dried fruit, or roasted root vegetables. Serve at around 14–16°C (slightly cooler than typical room temperature) to highlight its freshness and aromatics. Young bottles benefit from a brief 30–45 minute decant to open up the nose and soften the tannins, but gentle pouring into large Burgundy-style glasses is often enough to let the wine express itself fully.

Producer
Domaine Gramenon, located in the northern part of the southern Rhône near Montbrison-sur-Lez, has become one of the benchmark producers for authentic, low-intervention Grenache. Founded in the late 1970s, the estate truly rose to prominence under the stewardship of Michèle Aubéry-Laurent, who pioneered organic and later biodynamic practices long before they became fashionable in the region. Gramenon focuses on old vines, often planted at higher altitudes, and has built a reputation for producing wines that combine purity, energy, and terroir transparency. Widely respected in natural wine circles and by classic Rhône enthusiasts alike, the domaine’s cuvées consistently receive critical acclaim and have helped reframe the image of Côtes du Rhône—from simple everyday wine to something capable of real finesse, depth, and individuality.
