Description
Gourt de Mautens 2017 is a deeply expressive red from the Southern Rhône, crafted by one of the region’s most meticulous and uncompromising producers. This vintage is powerful yet polished, packed with dark fruit, savory nuances and a remarkably refined texture. It’s a wine that speaks clearly of its sun‑drenched terroir while retaining energy, freshness and poise.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Gourt de Mautens 2017 shows a dense, opaque ruby to garnet hue, with a vibrant rim that hints at both concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered: ripe black cherries and cassis are framed by crushed stone, black licorice, roasted Provençal herbs, and a subtle smokiness. With air, additional notes of violets, dried lavender and a touch of dark chocolate emerge.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and voluptuous, yet beautifully balanced. The lush dark fruit core—black cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant—is supported by fine, ripe tannins and a firm mineral backbone. There’s a savory, almost saline edge from the stony soils, and the roasted herb and licorice notes carry through into a long, persistent finish. Despite its richness, the wine retains freshness, suggesting excellent aging potential. Enjoyable now with a proper decant, it should evolve gracefully for 10–15 years from vintage, gaining in complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers.
Production
Domaine Gourt de Mautens lies in the hills around Rasteau in the Southern Rhône, on a patchwork of clay-limestone and stony, sun‑baked soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Old vines of mainly Grenache, Mourvèdre and other traditional Rhône varieties are farmed organically and biodynamically, with great emphasis on biodiversity and low intervention in the vineyard. Harvesting is done by hand, with strict sorting to retain only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Jérôme Bressy favors gentle extraction, native yeast fermentations and long macerations to capture depth without hardness. Aging typically takes place in a mix of concrete and large, neutral vessels rather than new oak, preserving the purity of fruit and the clear expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
This 2017 is a natural partner for rich, flavorful dishes: think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, grilled ribeye, duck with black cherry or plum glaze, or hearty stews such as beef daube or wild boar ragù. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté, Manchego or mature Gouda, and with dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs, olives and roasted vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to let the aromatics unfurl without emphasizing alcohol. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to soften the tannins and reveal the full spectrum of dark fruit, mineral and herbal complexity.
Producer
Domaine Gourt de Mautens was founded by Jérôme Bressy in the heart of Rasteau and quickly rose to cult status among Rhône enthusiasts. Dissatisfied with the constraints of the local appellation, Bressy chose to work under the broader Vaucluse designation, giving him the freedom to champion old, often forgotten Rhône varieties and to farm according to his own exacting biodynamic principles. The estate is now regarded as one of the most distinctive and sought‑after addresses in the Southern Rhône, known for intensely concentrated yet finely textured wines that age gracefully. Consistently high critical acclaim and limited production make Gourt de Mautens bottlings prized finds on serious wine lists and in discerning cellars worldwide.
