Description
Bottled in generous magnum format, the 2012 Gourt de Mautens IGP Vaucluse is a powerful yet finely sculpted southern Rhône red, crafted predominantly from old-vine Grenache. Awarded 95/100 by Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, this is a serious collector’s wine that showcases both the richness and precision that have made Gourt de Mautens a cult name in Rasteau. Sourced from clay- and limestone-rich parcels around the village, it offers a deeply expressive snapshot of the region’s terroir in a vintage built for long aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Gourt de Mautens shows an intense, opaque ruby to deep garnet hue, with a dense core that hints at its concentration and youthfulness, especially in magnum. The nose is captivating and layered: black cherries and ripe cassis mingle with notes of crushed stones, licorice, roasted herbs, and a subtle smoky, garrigue-like complexity. With air, more nuances emerge—dried violets, cocoa nib, and a touch of warm spice.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and opulent, yet remarkably pure and fresh. The Grenache-driven fruit is lush and velvety, with waves of black cherry, blackberry compote, and cassis framed by mineral undertones and savory herbs. The texture is “sexy” and seamless, with fine-grained, ripe tannins providing structure without harshness. The finish is long, polished, and balanced by a vibrant line of acidity that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. Tasted originally in 2016 with a projected window of 10–15 more years, the 2012 is now entering a superb drinking plateau, and in magnum format it still has considerable life ahead—expect peak enjoyment through at least the early to mid-2030s if well cellared.
Production
The fruit for this 2012 IGP Vaucluse comes exclusively from clay- and limestone-based soils surrounding Rasteau in the southern Rhône, a terroir known for low-yielding vines and excellent natural concentration. Gourt de Mautens works with meticulous attention in the vineyard, typically favoring organic/biodynamic principles, hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to capture both depth of fruit and fresh, natural acidity. In the cellar, the Grenache-dominated blend was raised for an extended 24–36 months in a combination of large foudres and demi-muids, a choice that gently polishes the wine and adds texture without masking its terroir-driven character. This long, patient élevage helps integrate tannins, enhance aromatic complexity, and support the wine’s impressive aging capacity, especially in large format.
Food & Serving
This rich, structured Rhône red calls for equally flavorful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with slow-braised lamb shanks, Provençal beef daube, duck confit, grilled ribeye, or game dishes such as venison with juniper and herbs. Earthy, aromatic sides—like roasted root vegetables, ratatouille, or mushroom ragouts—echo the wine’s savory, herbal notes, while aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego also work well. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression. Decanting is recommended: give it 1–2 hours in a wide carafe to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open, especially at this stage of its evolution and given the concentration of the magnum format.
Producer
Domaine Gourt de Mautens, founded and driven by the passionate vigneron Jérôme Bressy, has become one of the most sought-after addresses in the southern Rhône. Based in Rasteau, the estate is renowned for its old-vine Grenache and other traditional Rhône varieties grown on diverse clay- and limestone-rich slopes, farmed with great respect for the environment. Bressy’s commitment to low yields, precise vineyard work, and long, careful aging has produced wines of striking intensity and finesse, often transcending their modest IGP or Vin de France classifications. Over the years, Gourt de Mautens has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors, standing as a benchmark producer for soulful, terroir-driven wines from this corner of France.
