Description
Giuseppe Cortese Langhe Nebbiolo 2022 is a beautifully crafted red from one of Barbaresco’s most respected traditional producers. Sourced from younger vines in front of the estate, it offers a pure, unadorned expression of Nebbiolo at a more approachable stage than the estate’s cru bottlings. Expect a wine that combines structure, finesse and vivid fruit, clearly reflecting both the grape variety and the Piedmontese terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Langhe Nebbiolo shows a luminous ruby core with delicate garnet reflections at the rim, typical of youthful Nebbiolo. The nose opens with very classic aromas: redcurrants, sour cherry and wild berries layered with rose petals, a hint of violet, and subtle notes of spice and dried herbs.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet firmly structured, with lively acidity and finely grained tannins that give shape without overwhelming the fruit. Flavours of redcurrant, cherry and raspberry are joined by hints of blood orange, anise and a gentle mineral edge, leading to a long, clean and elegant finish. While it is inviting and drinkable now, the balance of fruit, acidity and tannin suggests an aging potential of around 5–7 years in a good cellar, during which it will gain complexity and soften further.
Production
The grapes for this Langhe Nebbiolo come from younger Nebbiolo vines planted in front of the Cortese winery, on the hills of Barbaresco in Piedmont. Here, calcareous clay and marl soils, combined with good exposure and significant day–night temperature swings, help Nebbiolo develop its trademark perfume and structure. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure only healthy, fully ripe bunches reach the cellar. Vinification follows a traditional, minimalist approach: gentle crushing, a temperature-controlled fermentation with maceration on the skins to extract colour and fine tannins, followed by maturation in neutral vessels and/or large, old oak so that the variety’s delicate aromatics and the character of the terroir are not masked by heavy wood influence.
Food & Serving
This Langhe Nebbiolo pairs wonderfully with classic Piedmontese dishes such as vitello tonnato, tajarin pasta with ragù, braised veal or mushroom-based risottos. It also complements roasted poultry, pork, charcuterie, semi-hard cheeses and truffle-accented dishes. Serve at 16–18°C; a brief decant of 30–45 minutes helps the aromas open and the tannins soften, especially in the first few years after release.
Producer
The Giuseppe Cortese estate is a family-run winery rooted in the heart of Barbaresco, with a history that stretches back several generations of grape growing and winemaking. Over time, the family has become closely associated with the Rabajà area, one of Barbaresco’s most revered crus, and is known for a steadfastly traditional, terroir-focused style. By combining meticulous vineyard work with classic cellar practices, the Cortese family has earned a strong reputation within the region for producing elegant, ageworthy Nebbiolo that faithfully reflects Barbaresco’s unique hillsides, with their Langhe Nebbiolo wines offering a more approachable but still authentically local expression.
