Description

Giulia Negri Barolo Serradenari 2020 is a beautifully poised, high-altitude Barolo that captures the cooler, more nuanced side of La Morra. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grown in the famed Serradenari cru, this is a Barolo that focuses on purity, energy and fine-boned elegance over brute power. Often called the “Barolo Girl,” Giulia Negri has become one of the brightest new stars in Piemonte, bringing a fresh, meticulous approach to one of the region’s highest and most historic vineyards.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Serradenari shows a luminous, medium garnet color with the classic Nebbiolo transparency that hints at both delicacy and depth. The nose is lifted and perfumed, with notes of wild cherry, rose petals, violet and blood orange layered over hints of licorice, crushed stone, sweet spices and a subtle, savory earthiness. On the palate, this Barolo is refined and vertical rather than heavy, with vibrant acidity and finely etched tannins that frame flavors of red cherries, raspberries, pomegranate and dried rose. Underneath, you’ll find nuances of tea leaf, anise, balsamic herbs and a gentle mineral salinity that speaks clearly of its high-altitude origin. The finish is long, precise and mouthwatering, suggesting excellent aging potential. While approachable with generous aeration in its youth, the 2020 vintage has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity and softness over time.

Production
Sourced from the Serradenari cru in La Morra—one of the highest sites in the entire Barolo zone—these vines benefit from cooler temperatures, excellent diurnal shifts and predominantly calcareous-marl soils that naturally favor finesse and aromatic complexity. Giulia Negri practices careful, low-intervention viticulture, working organically in the vineyard and harvesting by hand to ensure perfect selection of Nebbiolo bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, vinification is traditional yet precise: long, gentle macerations to extract fine tannins and aromatic detail, followed by élevage in large, neutral oak (often Slavonian botti) to preserve the purity of fruit and the signature Serradenari minerality, rather than mask it with overt wood.

Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine, at its best alongside classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with white truffle, braised veal shank, brasato al Barolo, or vitello tonnato. It also shines with game birds, roasted duck, mushroom risottos, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano, and hard alpine cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stems to allow the aromas to fully unfurl. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and open the bouquet, while more mature examples can be gently double-decanted shortly before serving.

Producer
Serradenari – Giulia Negri is a boutique estate located in La Morra, in the heart of Barolo, with vineyards that sit among the highest elevations in the appellation. The estate’s history in Serradenari stretches back generations, but it is Giulia Negri’s stewardship that has transformed it into one of the most talked-about names in modern Piemonte. Embracing organic farming, low yields and a thoughtful mix of traditional and contemporary techniques, she has carved out a distinctive style built on delicacy, precision and terroir transparency. Often cited as a key figure in Barolo’s new wave of vignerons, Giulia Negri has received growing international acclaim and has firmly established Serradenari as one of La Morra’s most compelling and characterful crus.
