Description
Giulia Negri Barolo Marassio 2021 is a finely etched, high-altitude expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s most exciting young voices. Sourced from the lofty Marassio parcel in La Morra, this wine marries classic Barolo structure with striking finesse and aromatic lift. It’s a contemporary interpretation rooted firmly in tradition, showcasing how elegance and purity can define great Barolo as much as power.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Marassio shows a luminous, transparent garnet with a delicate brick-tinged rim—textbook young Barolo from high altitude vines. The nose is precise and perfumed, opening with violet, rose petal, and wild strawberry before deepening into blood orange zest, red cherry, pomegranate, and subtle notes of anise, sweet spices, and crushed limestone.
On the palate, the wine is taut, vertical, and wonderfully detailed. Fine, chalk-dusted tannins frame flavors of sour cherry, cranberry, and red currant, supported by juicy acidity and a subtly saline, mineral core. Hints of licorice, forest herbs, and tea leaf unfold with air, giving a sense of depth without weight. The finish is long, clean, and linear, emphasizing purity of fruit and minerality over sheer extraction. While already graceful in youth, this 2021 has the structure and balance to age beautifully for 12–20 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuance with time in bottle.
Production
Marassio is one of the highest sites in the Barolo area, perched on the Serradenari hill in La Morra, with vineyards reaching over 500 meters above sea level. Here, Nebbiolo grows on poor, calcareous-marl soils with a strong limestone component, which naturally limits yields and enhances aromatic intensity and precision. The cooler, breezy microclimate extends the growing season, allowing slow, even ripening and excellent natural acidity. Grapes are farmed with an organic, low-intervention philosophy and harvested by hand in small crates to preserve berry integrity. In the cellar, Giulia Negri favors gentle vinification: long macerations to extract fine tannins and aromatics rather than heaviness, followed by aging in large, neutral oak (botti) that respects the vineyard character. The result is a Barolo that expresses its altitude and terroir with clarity: refined structure, lifted aromatics, and a stony, saline backbone.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural match for elegant yet flavorful dishes: think tajarin with white truffle, braised veal shank, roasted lamb with rosemary, or game birds with porcini mushrooms. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino, and truffle-based dishes of all kinds. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stemware to allow the aromatics to unfurl. Young vintages like 2021 benefit from decanting—give it 1–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and fully reveal the floral, citrus, and mineral nuances.
Producer
Serradenari – Giulia Negri is one of the rising stars of Barolo, often affectionately nicknamed the “Barolo Girl” for her combination of youthful energy and deep respect for tradition. The estate is based in La Morra on the Serradenari hill, one of the highest points in the Barolo zone, long known for producing wines with aromatic lift and refined structure. Taking over the family property at a young age, Giulia pursued a Burgundian-inspired approach to Barolo: meticulous work in the vineyard, organic farming, and a cru-focused philosophy that highlights the distinct personalities of individual parcels like Marassio. In just a few vintages, her wines have attracted significant critical attention and are now considered among the most compelling new-wave expressions of Barolo, balancing classic Piedmontese identity with a modern sense of precision and elegance.
