Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso A'Rina 2022

Girolamo Russo’s A’Rina is a refined Etna Rosso that captures the high-altitude character of Sicily’s Mount Etna. Made primarily from Nerello Mascalese with Nerello Cappuccio, it combines the structure of fine red wine with the freshness, mineral complexity and aromatic lift associated with the volcano’s northern slopes.

Tasting Notes
Bright ruby red in appearance, with subtle garnet tones developing with age. The nose is expressive and layered, offering red cherries, wild berries, dried flowers and herbs alongside delicate smoky, earthy and mineral notes. On the palate, A’Rina is fresh and finely structured, with vibrant acidity, elegant tannins and a gently savoury finish. Its balance and volcanic character make it enjoyable now, while careful cellaring for approximately 5–8 years should bring added complexity.

Production
The grapes are grown on the northern slopes of Mount Etna near Randazzo, where high elevations, significant day-to-night temperature variation and dark volcanic soils create naturally fresh, concentrated wines. The vineyards are cultivated with respect for their environment, and the Nerello varieties are traditionally harvested by hand. Fermentation and maturation are carried out with a restrained approach designed to preserve the character of the grapes and their volcanic origin, allowing the wine’s fruit, mineral notes and fine tannic structure to remain in focus.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C, ideally after a short period of aeration; decanting for 30–60 minutes can help open the wine, particularly in its youth. Its bright acidity and savoury profile pair beautifully with roast lamb, grilled or braised pork, mushroom dishes, aubergine, tomato-based pasta and mature cheeses. It is also an excellent match for the richly seasoned cuisine of Sicily.

The estate works with old hillside vineyards and focuses on expressing the distinctive identity of Etna through native grape varieties, especially Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Its wines are widely valued for their elegance, transparency and ability to combine the finesse of Burgundy-inspired cool-climate reds with the unmistakable volcanic character of Sicily.
