Description

Giodo Brunello di Montalcino 2019 in magnum format is a poised, beautifully sculpted expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most respected winemakers, Carlo Ferrini. Often cited by Ferrini himself as his finest Brunello to date, this 2019 marries purity of fruit with precision and energy, making it a standout even among the great recent vintages. Bottled in a 1.5 L magnum, it offers slower, more graceful evolution and is ideal for the cellar or a special table.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Giodo Brunello di Montalcino shows a luminous, deep ruby core with garnet nuances toward the rim, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose is highly expressive yet refined, opening with sweet red cherry, wild strawberry, and blood orange, followed by notes of violet, iris, and rose petal. With air, more complex layers emerge: balsamic tones, Mediterranean herbs, hints of tobacco leaf, licorice, and a stony, almost chalky minerality that reflects its pale, rocky soils. On the palate, this is a Brunello of depth and dimension rather than sheer weight. The fruit profile is beautifully ripe but not heavy—think red cherry, raspberry, and a touch of black plum—wrapped in vibrant acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. Fine, silky yet persistent tannins give structure without harshness, guiding a very long, resonant finish marked by floral notes, subtle spice, and a lingering balsamic freshness. In magnum, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully from now with proper aeration, but it should evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, gaining in complexity and tertiary nuances.

Production
The fruit for Giodo’s Brunello di Montalcino 2019 comes from a meticulously farmed, three-hectare amphitheater-shaped parcel called La Poderina, carved into the forested slopes of Montalcino with views toward Monte Amiata. Vines are around 19 years old and rooted in pale, white, stony soils rich in limestone and stones, which naturally limit yields and emphasize brightness, aromatics, and tension in the wine. The Sangiovese (Brunello) is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to preserve only perfectly healthy, balanced clusters. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with gentle extraction to safeguard finesse over power, followed by long, traditional aging in large, neutral oak casks in line with Brunello regulations. After extended maturation in wood and bottle, the 2019 was released only when Ferrini judged the tannins and aromatics to be fully harmonized, with the magnum format offering an even slower, more refined evolution.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Brunello is a natural partner for refined, savoury dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb or veal shank, roast game birds, or rich stews with porcini mushrooms. It also shines alongside truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight its aromatics and freshness. Given the wine’s youth and structure, especially in magnum, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to allow the floral and balsamic notes to fully open and the tannins to soften on the palate.

Producer
Giodo is the personal Montalcino project of Carlo Ferrini, one of Italy’s most celebrated consulting oenologists, who has shaped the style of many top Tuscan estates over the last several decades. Founded in 2009, Giodo quickly earned a reputation as a boutique estate producing some of the most elegant and pure expressions of Sangiovese in the region, combining Ferrini’s deep technical expertise with a very artisanal, vineyard-focused approach. The estate’s small size allows for meticulous attention to detail, from low-yield farming to precise selections in the cellar, and its wines have rapidly become benchmarks for modern yet classically grounded Brunello di Montalcino. The 2019 vintage is widely seen as a milestone for Giodo, confirming its status among the elite producers of the appellation.
