Description

Giodo Alberelli Nerello Mascalese 2021 is a refined Sicilian red that captures the haunting beauty of Nerello Mascalese grown on volcanic soils. Delicate in color yet deep in personality, it balances vibrant fruit with a finely etched mineral backbone. Crafted in small quantities by renowned enologist Carlo Ferrini, it offers a precise, authentic expression of Sicily’s high-altitude, bush-trained vineyards.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Nerello Mascalese shows a luminous, transparent ruby hue, almost Pinot-like in its elegance. The nose opens with vivid notes of sour cherry and blackcurrant, followed by hints of wild blue flowers, blood orange peel, and a distinct iron-like minerality that speaks clearly of volcanic origin. On the palate, the wine is graceful yet persistent, with a medium body and a taut, refreshing acidity that keeps everything finely balanced. Red and dark berries mingle with citrus zest, savory herbs, and a subtle ferrous, smoky undertone. The tannins are fine-grained and slowly melt across the palate, creating a long, layered finish that lingers with notes of cherry, spice, and stone. Enjoyable now for its purity and finesse, it also has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 6–8 years, gaining further complexity and silkiness with time in bottle.

Production
The Alberelli name refers to the traditional bush-trained vines that define many of Sicily’s finest Nerello Mascalese sites, often rooted in mineral-rich volcanic soils and cooled by altitude and maritime breezes. These conditions naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor, while preserving the grape’s hallmark freshness and aromatic lift. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, then gently destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled conditions to capture purity of fruit and fine tannic structure. Aging in carefully chosen vessels—often a mix of neutral oak and/or large casks—helps polish the wine’s texture without masking its transparent, terroir-driven character.

Food & Serving
This elegant Nerello Mascalese is a superb partner for refined Mediterranean dishes such as grilled lamb chops with herbs, roasted guinea fowl, or pork loin with fennel and orange. It also shines alongside mushroom-based dishes, roasted root vegetables, tuna or swordfish steaks, and aged semi-hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. A short decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more floral and mineral nuances.

For those searching an alternative to Pinot Noir, this is a perfect choice. Light in color but full of character, it’s silky, fresh, and elegant, with bright red fruit, gentle herbs, and a subtle volcanic mineral finish. It has that Pinot-like finesse and drinkability.
