Description

A rare and highly collectible German sweet wine, the 1953 Gillot & Söhne Dienheimer Eselspfad Riesling Beerenauslese offers a remarkable glimpse into the winemaking traditions of post-war Rheinhessen. Produced from botrytised Riesling grapes harvested at exceptional ripeness, this limited 0.7-litre bottle combines historic significance with the concentration and longevity expected of a classic Beerenauslese.

Tasting Notes
With more than seven decades of bottle age, the wine is likely to show a deep golden to amber appearance, depending on its storage history. The nose is richly perfumed, with aromas of mature and dried fruit, honey, spice and evolving tertiary notes. On the palate, expect a full-bodied, luscious sweetness balanced by Riesling’s characteristic acidity, with layers of ripe fruit and honey leading to a long, persistent finish. As a 1953 vintage, this is a wine to appreciate for its rarity and development rather than simply its youthful fruit. Properly stored examples may continue to evolve, although the condition of the individual bottle, fill level and provenance are important factors when assessing further ageing potential.

Production
The Beerenauslese was made from hand-selected Riesling grapes grown on the steep slopes of the Dienheimer Eselspfad in Rheinhessen. The grapes were harvested only after reaching advanced ripeness and developing noble rot, or Botrytis cinerea, which naturally concentrates their sugars and aromatic compounds. This painstaking selection and late harvesting are central to the wine’s richness, intensity and balance.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature cheeses; it can also be enjoyed with dark chocolate when the dish is not overly sweet. Decanting is not usually necessary, but carefully standing the bottle upright and pouring gently can help separate any sediment, while a short period of aeration may reveal additional mature aromas.

Producer
Gillot & Söhne is presented here through a historic Rheinhessen bottling from the Dienheimer Eselspfad, a vineyard site associated with concentrated Riesling wines. The 1953 vintage reflects an earlier era of German wine production and is offered in limited quantities, making it especially appealing to collectors of mature German sweet wines. As with any wine of this age, provenance and storage conditions are essential to its overall value and drinking experience.
