Description

Giacomo Conterno Riserva Monfortino Barolo 2001 in magnum is one of the most revered expressions of Nebbiolo ever bottled from Piedmont. Sourced from the legendary Monforte d’Alba vineyards and only produced in great vintages, this is a towering, age‑worthy Barolo that marries finesse with immense power. The 2001 Monfortino is already considered a modern classic, a benchmark wine that captures the soul of traditional Barolo at its most profound.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2001 Monfortino shows a deep garnet core with brick‑tinged edges, reflecting both its age and noble Nebbiolo heritage. The nose is intensely perfumed and complex, with layers of sweet red berries, dried cherry, and wild strawberry woven through rose petals, tar, licorice, and subtle exotic spices. Hints of leather, tobacco leaf, and forest floor emerge with air, signalling a wine still unfolding. On the palate, this Barolo is at once refined and formidable. Concentrated red fruit glides over a firm spine of tannin and vibrant acidity, giving the wine both elegance and a powerful inner drive. Flavours of sweet red berries, rose, anise, and savory spice deepen into notes of black tea, truffle and mineral on the very long, resonant finish. In magnum format, the 2001 remains youthful and tightly coiled; while already captivating, it still begs for further cellaring. Expect peak maturity from around 2021 through 2041 and beyond, with magnum bottles offering an even longer, more graceful evolution.

Production
Monfortino is sourced from the famed Serralunga/Monforte area of Barolo, where high‑altitude vineyards, marl and limestone soils, and a continental climate with wide diurnal shifts yield Nebbiolo of exceptional structure and aromatic purity. Grapes are meticulously hand‑harvested at optimal ripeness and carefully sorted to ensure only the finest fruit enters the cellar. True to Giacomo Conterno’s traditional philosophy, fermentation takes place in large wooden vats with extended maceration, extracting depth, tannin and complexity from the skins. The wine is then aged for many years in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti, allowing it to develop slowly and harmoniously without overt oak influence before being bottled, unhurried, in magnum to ensure maximum longevity.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that shines at the table with equally noble cuisine. Think classic Piedmontese dishes such as braised veal shank, brasato al Barolo, tajarin with white truffle, and rich game birds, as well as aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno. It also pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, venison, and earthy mushroom preparations. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and allow generous time for the wine to open; for a magnum of this age and pedigree, decanting 2–4 hours before serving is strongly recommended to let the aromatics blossom and the tannins soften.

Producer
Giacomo Conterno is one of the most iconic and respected names in Barolo, a reference point for traditional, long‑lived wines from Piedmont. Founded in the early 20th century, the estate became world‑renowned when Giacomo and later his son Giovanni defined the style of Monfortino as a powerful, uncompromising Barolo Riserva produced only in top vintages from the finest Nebbiolo grapes. Today, the Conterno family remains a guardian of classic Barolo, crafting wines that are celebrated by collectors, critics and sommeliers alike for their purity, integrity and extraordinary aging capacity. Monfortino in particular stands as a benchmark for the region and one of Italy’s greatest wines.
